Why the Syndicate remake is an FPS?

Starbreeze tries explain the reason behind the surprising new route of one of the beloved real-time strategy classic.

For the last two days, the big news is all about Starbreeze' reinvention of the Syndicate franchise. But what's surprising about the remake is the fact that they are ditching the real-time strategy elements of the original, and making it a first-person shooter, a move that was not appreciated by many. The reasons for the sudden shift of the genre?

"It was always going to be an FPS," game director Neil McEwan told OXM. "The original nub of the idea was to take that viewpoint from the original game and zoom into the Agent's head, and play that part. A closer experience - to become one of those Agents."

Despite the new direction of the franchise, McEwan believes that they can still create a game that can please long time fans and newcomers alike.

"We're big fans of the original Syndicate, and we're definitely paying as much homage to it as we can - bringing across the essence of the world, the core essence of what it is to be an Agent. That sounds wanky but it's true - we're taking the Persuadatron and evolving it in different ways, the weapons and brutality. On both facets of the game, the co-op and the single player, it's very key to stay true to it."

Designer Rickard Johansson added: "Hopefully co-op is a great nod towards the old gang. I don't want people to stop playing the old games, but time has moved on." The Syndicate series has always been known for its overhead viewpoint style gameplay, so this new direction is quite surprising... and personally disappointing.

Lame excuse...
I think if they haven't programmed too much of it, they can still make it more Tactical though.
They could probably make it where you tell your squad to go, and they could make it so you can switch between squad members.
However, I don't think they will...

I think it sounds like a cool idea.

Syndicate was a cool world that would be awesome to be even more immersed in from the POV of an FPS than would be possible from the top down "gods eye" perspective.

But I can see how it could bother real hardcore fans of the original also.

But there will still always be the original.

This sucks. You know there are only 2 reasons this game is a FPS: 1. They think it'll sell the most, coz CoD is so popular, you know??
2: Coz COD, yo!

They probably think people only want to play FPSs... even though they're the most boring, unimaginative genre I can think of.

This is goddamn lame. It'll probably be a mediocre FPS, but get a lot of attention because of it's name.

And....
IF YOUR GONNA MAKE SOMETHING NEW, MAKE SOMETHING NEW FFS!

Whoa now, easy there.

FPSes are overused, but they are not unimaginative.

There's many ways you can make them better, it's just that the devs want quick cash most of the time.

So they end up releasing clones of whatever game is most popular at the time, while using a game that was popular before as it's title.

Rather than being reboots though, most of them are just boots in the butt...except when they do it right(e.g.Fallout)

Oh, its simple. Games aren't being creative because you can easily make a shitty First Person Shooter and instantly expect cash. Its not about being good anymore, its about having guns.

Well, too bad story-wise original agents have no thought and are completely controlled by executive, save some automatic AI reactions. But who cares about that shit, right? Pew-pew is all people need!
