If you’re looking for a quick way to completely undercut the “gritty reality” of your video game, adding a completely worthless multiplayer mode in which you arbitrarily kill everything you see is a good way to go. It certainly worked at blunting the point of Spec Ops: The Line, so there’s no reason to assume you couldn’t do it elsewhere. You know, like in Tomb Raider.

Square Enix agrees. And since it’s already tried to taint your enthusiasm for Tomb Raider by making it less tomb-y and introducing the extremely fun narrative hurdle of attempted sexual assault, really the only thing left was cramming in a multiplayer mode that makes literally no sense.
