Facebook is a massive force when it comes to mobilizing fans and aggregating support around any one particular cause--it’s no big surprise that developers and publishers alike are constantly looking for ways to utilize the platform to generate more hype for their games. But Naughty Dog is up to something dramatically different: the company is using the social media platform to recruit a new in-game character for Uncharted 3’s multiplayer.

Curious? Here are the details:

Contestants must participate in three rounds of online auditions (via webcam), hosted by Facebook. The players with the most votes will be flown to Los Angeles to participate in the live finale, which will be presided over by judges from the development studio. The winning player then gets to travel to Naughty Dog studios and create their own multiplayer character, which will be available in an upcoming DLC pack. 

It’s an interesting way to gin up hype for a game that’s been out for a few months, and it will certainly be curious to see what types of gamers end up auditioning themselves for the role.
