Videogames Inoculate Against Nightmares

In a recent study where 64 ‘hardcore’ gamers and 22 casual gamers had their dreams compared, results showed that the casual gamers experienced ‘more threatening’ dreams.

The participants were, or are, all members of US or Canadian militaries. In military based dreams, the casual gamers were ‘passive victims’, with the hardcore gamers being ‘active participants’.

The researchers said that violent games may numb people to violence, and whilst that usually seen as a negative, it can be beneficial. The ‘habit of fighting back, an winning’ when playing games can carry over and into the dream world.

It’s an interesting study, because I've found ‘hardcore’ gamers to have…less ‘formal’ sleep routines, and irregular patterns always (at least for me) lead to horrific and disturbing nightmares.

Most of the time I dont dream about anything... my worst nightmare is the alarm ringing in the morning. But sometimes if i play a very beautiful sequence late at night and go to sleep immediately. But it is usually funny and feels cos it seems like I am living in the amazing world of the game

When I play a new game for a while, it gets to my dreams. I had some dreams with a Bioware-style dialogue wheel, or turn-based FFVI encounters with people or the Shadow Hearts combat music playing the entire time.

I play tons of games... and rarely have nightmares. I dont often dream scenarios that a game would have and thus don't act them out... but... yeah, nightmares are rare for me.

If i play an fps for a long time, something like call of duty, online deathmatch, I will sometime dream about playing this afterwards, probably since it is so fast paced and pretty intense gameplay. However most of the time I dont remember my dreams.

Sometimes if i play a game before i go to sleep, when i dream its like the game just loops in my head or im playing the game not in it lol.

I once dreamed i was Luigi, but strangely in the dream all i did was fit a new sink and adjust the toilets float arm.
