Videogame ‘Writing Award’ Given To…

BAFTA’s aren't the only non-primarily-videogame award ceremony that pays attention to games; yesterday, the Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) held their award ceremony, and among the categories was ‘Video Game Writing’.

Now I’m not being picky here, as I’m happy the medium is being recognized, but the award winner doesn’t quite seem…well, great.

Being a Writer’s Guild, the award goes not to the game but to the writer, and rightfully so, Thus, the winner of the Video Game Writing Award goes to…Amy Hennig!

No need to Google it, Amy Hennig is the writer for Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. The game is very cinematic, very beautiful and the writing is good too. Good, but not great (I’m sure you’ll agree on that, it’s not bad but not great.)

Videogame’s just have more to offer in terms of scriptwriting, and the fact that Mortal Kombat and Brink were nominees is making me stare at the screen, dribbling and occasionally flinching, reminding myself to breathe.

L.A. Noire wasn't on the list, and what gives? Agh, I don’t know, and I hope that Grand Theft Auto V will be a contender next year, those games have under appreciated writing.

Do you think Uncharted 3 is worthy of the writing award, or is there another game in the last year that you would have preferred to see?

Well, I guess you haven't played MK's story mode then. There was definitly a lot of writing going on there! Most of it was actually good too, for a MK game anyway...

I would agree with you that perhaps drake 3 wasn't the best game to make the list. and brink/MK should definitely not have been nominated. but your suggestion that Grand theft auto or L.A. Noire make the list is absurd. frankly a game shouldn't even get nominated unless it's an rpg along the lines of final fantasy or Fallout.

L.A. Noire isn't a game where you play a role? :-*

Actually i think Amy deserved the recognition she received, as she was the one behind the legacy of kain games, and those stories were great. So if she got it for Uncharted 3, more power to her.

But you are right in La Noire not being there.

The way they dish out these writing awards for video games makes me feel like there is a parallel universe full of celebate people who walk on their hands.
