Uncharted 3's lack of dedicated servers explained |
Listed in: News Tags: Naughty Dog, uncharted 3
Many fans were aghast at the prospect that Uncharted 3 will not have its own dedicated servers, and will instead have to rely on peer-to-peer connections. To allay your concerns, Naughty Dog has spoken out about it.

There goes my hopes for dedicated servers.
This desire to explain came up when a disappointed player, trying out the game's multiplayer beta, raised his issues directly to the publisher via Twitter. Here is Naughty Dog's response:
"We're not going to have dedicated servers, made that decision long time ago + we built current player host-client architecture. Decision for that server architecture was to be better able to support our fans long-term if we can/want.
The cost delta between dedicated & non-dedicated is huge long term. Eventually someone will say it costs too great + shut them down. My personal hope is that by keeping costs down + strong enough community, we could be in a position to consider 4+ yrs of uptime."
It kind of makes you wonder why Naughty Dog would even think of taking out an essential tool to make sure that gamers experience the game flawlessly for the purpose of cutting down costs. With the success of the past two iterations of the franchise, you'd think they'd be able to afford a basic gaming need such as dedicated servers. Hopefully, this doesn't hurt the game too much.
Oh, but wait. Maybe if it does, then they'll reconsider. Uncharted 3 comes out November 1st for North America, and Europe recently got their date moved up to November 2nd, positioning the game for a near-simultaneous launch.

Dedicated servers over even a couple of months are very expensive to run and are in no way a 'basic gaming need'. Multiplayer functionality isn't even a 'basic gaming need', let alone online multiplayer.
Besides, Naughty Dog doesn't have much experience running online games so they're going with what costs the least and is the most sustainable as to establish a reputable presence in the online gaming market - They wouldn't make much of an impact if they could only run their servers for a year before shutting down due to budget restrictions and server-side issues.
Maybe we'll see ded. servers after UC3's estimated 4+ year p2p run, maybe we won't - either way, it's hardly a deal breaker.

Anything else is just extra, including online.

With the way the internet is progressing, in 3-4 years time it should hopefully be much more reliable globally anyway.
I mean the UK should have better access to fibre when BT have finished their rollout, so that alone will be an improvement to the internet backbone.
And as they've said, this means the online part of the game could remain in use forever as they won't ever have to shut any servers down.

Having said that I think they still need to provide servers that will act as a client on the p2p for the first year or so.

It's looking to be shut down sooner or later, and when it is, it'll be a completely disappointed experience. Building games on a peer-to-peer network, while perhaps cheaper or whatever else, ultimately provides a much longer life-line for the game. They multiplayer lasts as long as people want to play it.
Even if EA went dedicated servers for "better multiplayer", if something were to happen where they went bankrupt in the next year or two, you'd lose that server and have nothing. And this is working under the assumption the server itself never has issues.
The peer-to-peer system is ultimately more functional, so I'm not sure what all the griping is about.

I can understand companies like EA shutting a load of online servers off, but what about people who (let's say for example) prefer FIFA 10's online to FIFA 12?
P2P would at least allow people to continue playing an old game, and even get the online trophies (of which a LOT of games now have and are needed for the platinum trophy!)
Either way, I fully support Naughty Dog for choosing P2P multiplayer, so long as they make the game as hack/cheat proof as possible.
