Ubisoft: Upset Fans are “Misinformed” Regarding Splinter Cell: Blacklist

If you’ve seen anything related to Ubisoft’s upcoming Splinter Cell Blacklist, you’ve also probably noticed that so far there’s been a serious lack of stealth. Most of what Ubisoft has displayed, especially at E3, has focused heavily on explosions and a very non-sneaky Sam Fisher acting a complete fool.

So, naturally, fans are sort of upset. However, Ubisoft insists that the complaints fans have over the franchise’s run from stealth has more to do with their lack of information than with the way the actual game is designed:

“Everyone can make kneejerk reactions to a vertical slice of the game that are really uninformed as to what the whole experience is like. We really have to be patient as we roll out each item about the game. What we showed at E3 was very explosive, very violent. That kind of stuff tends to get shown, but as we roll out different aspects of the game you'll see a lot more diversity and lot more of what hardcore fans are expecting to see. There are two distinct styles of gameplay -- you can ghost a map, or you can go wild as well. There are some areas you'll have to play stealth, but there are areas where you'll find it hard if you don't use wide-open action.”

While there’s something to be said for fan overreaction, it’s pretty ballsy to blame your customers for being “uninformed” when the only way they can get information is by watching your presentations. If everything Ubisoft shows off related to Splinter Cell Blacklist involves explosions and action, I fail to see how that’s the fans’ fault for assuming the rest of the game follows suit.

There’s plenty more interesting stuff in the original Eurogamer interview. Fans of Splinter Cell should definitely give it a look. In the meantime, what are your thoughts on Blacklist so far?
