Double Fine's hugely successful Kickstarter project is almost up to two million and now other companies and game devs are looking into it, especially the wonderfully coarse, David Jaffe. Jaffe's new game, Twisted Metal comes out tomorrow and in the last few weeks he did announce he'd be forming a new San Diego studio to make smaller, more casual projects. Could they be funded by Kickstarter?
Well when asked, he said to Gamasutra, that "I think the real question, whether in the next month if the campaign hits $2 million or $8 million, does that signal a new way of funding games? Or is this kind of a one-off thing, because it was lead by Tim Schafer? Is this actually moving the needle? That, we don't know." I think Jaffe is right with all the speculation and hype. No one knows if anyone else will be able to pull off another Kickstarter multi-million dollar deal. I personally think with the right buzz, game and people behind it, any game is possible on Kickstarter.
Jaffe also said about Schafer's project that he personally, would consider [crowdfunding]. There's kind of the fear that this would suddenly become, you know, a dick-measuring contest. Schafer comes out and raises a million, and Jaffe only raises $200,000," he joked. "But joking aside, I definitely think it's a really cool thing, so I would consider it. I think I would be really nervous because suddenly now it's not just a publisher's money. Suddenly you have all these peoples' money, and you don't want to let them down."
For now Jaffe is looking into different ways to fund projects and even considering dipping into his personal saving to start his new studio, which hasn't really formed yet. Jaffe hopes to form some game concepts he's interested in developing in the coming weeks; games for consoles, core gamer-centric browser games and even small indie games. Jaffe is even looking into developing a free-to-play browser game, which may or may not be funded by himself.
Eat Sleep Play's Twisted Metal comes out for PS3 on Valentine's Day tomorrow (holy shit), and he's on a maintenance contract for the next several weeks to make sure that online play has a smooth launch. People interested in Jaffe's new studio have talked to him since he announced his plans last year, but there's no company name, it's not a corporation yet, and it's probably "at best" 2 months out, and "at worst 8 months out from having a company with running lights. It's very new."
To get the final word on Double Fine and Schafer's Kickstarter success, Jaffe said, "The biggest thing to me about what happened is what a great thing to happen to such a good guy. ... He's a really fucking good guy, and that team walks the walk. They stick to their principles."
