Three Square Enix RPG's confirmed for the PSN this winter season |
Listed in: News Tags: chrono cross, final fantasy 6, final fantasy v, final fantasy vi, PlayStation Network, square enix psn, square enix rpgs
Three classic Square Enix RPG's are being re-released on the PSN, they are:
- Chrono Cross (sequel to Chrono Trigger) – November 8th
- Final Fantasy V – November 22nd
- Final Fantasy VI (know also as Final Fantasy III outside Japan) – December 6th
All three titles have now been given 'firm' release dates for the Playstation network and will therefore be available for play on the PS3 before the end of the year, and the Playstation Vita in 2012.
Square Enix labels these three game releases for the pSN as the 'Winter of RPGs campaign', even though 2 of them will actually be out before the official start of the winter season (/eyeroll)
Chrono Trigger is still one of my favourite Playstation titles, but it took my forever to finish the dam thing. Chrono Cross I never got in to very much, so perhaps someone in the comments could shed some light on the storyline?

Chrono Cross came out on the Psone in 2000, but never got picked up by another other platforms (though Chrono Trigger was on DS, Virtual Console and the PSN).
FFV and FFVI are good additions to the PSN, but due to the disconnect between Japanese releases and those of North America, it is hard to describe the characters that will be in the game.
FFV will allow you to play as Bartz Klauser, but if you have never played the Japanese version of FFV, you may not recognise him.
Both of these titles were released by Square Enix as gameboy games, so beware, they aren't going to be blowing you away visually.
Good luck with your trip down RPG memory lane. Let us know if you plan to get any of these titles.

Not a direct sequel but still a fun and interesting romp through parallel worlds. The best way to enjoy this game is to drop any preconceived notions of time travel and playing as youre favorite spiky headed hero. Get past this though and you will find a game that is both engaging, semi-challenging, and with a storyline that is like no other.
Final Fantsy V
Originally a Japanese only SNES title. First game in the series that has the job system so you can set your team up literally however you want. Graphically it is similar to Final Fantasy IV and pretty much the same gameplay wise. Generally good story as well
Final Fantasy VI
Possibly the only Final Fantasy that could arguably be better than the ever popular Final Fantasy VII. This was the last Final Fantasy to grace the SNES. Graphically its better than FF4 and FF5, but not as good as Chrono Trigger. Gameplay wise it's very much like FF7. Each character has a special ability and have a limit-like attack similar to FF8's limit system, kind of like a desperation attack when they are weekened. The story is standard FF group fights empire and then something bigger takes over the plot, but the characters are wonderful and you just grow to hate the villain as the game progresses. FF6 also has what is usually considered the best musical score of any of the Final Fantasy games. If you haven't played it you are missing out.
