The dispute revolves on the Blu-ray patent technology, which, according to LG, was infringed upon by Sony. Three patents were specifically asserted to in the complaint filed by LG Electronics:

- European Patent 1676275 on a "recording medium having data structure for managing reproduction of text subtitle and reocrding and reproducing methods and apparatuses"; this patent was applied for in the US and various other countries.
- European Patent 1730730 on a "recording medium and method and apparatus for reproducing text subtitle stream recorded on the recording medium; the corresponding US Patent No. 7,756,398 is one of the four patents asserted by LG in its ITC complaint over the PlayStation 3.
- European Patent 1884934 on a "recording medikum having data structure for managing reproduction of data streams recorded thereon and recording and reproducing methods and apparatuses"; the corresponding US Patent No. 7,701,835 is also among the four patents asserted in LG's ITC complaint over the PS3.
Intellectual property activist Florian Mueller shared on his blog the 48-page injunction order on his blog, explaining further the backstory of this legal lockdown between the two corporate giants:
"LG explains that those patents are essential to the Blu-ray disc standard, and therefore, in LG's opinion, necessarily infringed by the PlayStation 3 since it comes with a Blu-ray player. LG claims that it was willing to grant Sony a license on FRAND (fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory) terms in accordance with the rules of the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), but LG says 'Sony wants to [take a license] only if LGE and Sony also reach aggrement on royalties in its entirely different and unrelated technology areas (such as TVs, monitors and mobile phones."
"LG expresses doubts about whether that position is in line with competition law, but at any rate, LG wants to receive royalties on Sony's PlayStation 3 sales... Under the circumstances, LG believes that Sony should be treated like any other patent infringer and not be allowed to sell the PS3 in the Netherlands until it has taken a license to LG's Blu-ray patents."

Your saying it's LGs and the courts fault Sony infringed patents, stealing other company's intellectual property?

But I seriously doubt it would come to that: I can't imagine they'd actually seize bought-and-payed-for units from people's homes. More likely they'd simply make Sony pay a fine or royalties on units sold.

Sony is going to have to answer a ton of complains of people who get their console taken away. Its their(sony) product not LG.

They are just confiscating them before they go to retailers...

It's not GREAT that the PS3 units should be destroyed (recycled for sure)or does that mean the same thing?
Anyway...Its hard to comprehend how Ps3's already sold to people COULD be confiscated is beyond me!!!
It's not like they are a Health Hazard like exploding laptop batteries is it?????????
So theres SONY claiming that Geohot & party are UPTO NO GOOD.....and then this new info hits the press that SONY are UPTO NO GOOD!!!!!What a Fukin'JOKE all round....I buy stuff and I get stuff at no extra cost....But recently I haven't bought anything BRAND NEW for years...It's pointless....USED is just as practical...or more so......Hell of a lot cheaper too!
I dearly hope that this affair really damages SONY beyond redemption...they deserve it.
