The results of a new Nielsen study have been released, and they show that PS3 owners love to use their gaming console mostly for things other than gaming.

The Play vs. Stream: The Modern Gaming Console study polled over 2,500 consumers based in the United States. Here are the highlights:
PS3 Usage
- Watching video-on-demand and streaming services – 24 percent (up from 15 percent last year)
- Watching DVDs and Blu-rays – 18 percent
- Watching downloaded movies and television shows – 4 percent
- All other uses (internet, listening to music) – 8 percent
- Playing video games offline – 28 percent (down from 38 percent last year)
- Playing video games online – 18 percent
The study also polled consumers on Xbox 360 and Wii usage. The Xbox 360 had the most gaming-centric usage of the three consoles, as its owners said that they gamed on the console 66 percent of the time. The Wii had the least online gaming usage at 11 percent, but was the leader in terms of video-on-demand and streaming viewing at 32 percent.
Which console do you have, and what do you use it for mostly?

Yeah, PS3 is pretty great for media services, but IMO it should mainly be used for gaming.

Of course, while still without charging for online play.
Alas, party chat and in-game music were impossible with the PS3, as, I believe, Sony had said.
