Square Enix: PlayStation Era was “Golden Age” of Final Fantasy

Remember Final Fantasy VII? How about Final Fantasy X? XII? If you owned a PlayStation or PlayStation 2 and like Final Fantasy, chances are good that you’ve got some fond memories of at least one Final Fantasy game made between the years of 1997 and 2006.

As it turns out, Square Enix has fond memories of those as well:

That’s just one of three slides outlining the history of Final Fantasy at their presentation at PAX over the weekend. Here are the other two, for the sake of clarity:

While the divisions are mostly based on console hardware, it’s interesting that Square Enix elected to call the second batch the “Golden Age” instead of “Recent Past” or something more neutral.

One thing’s for sure: If Final Fantasy did have some sort of Golden Age, it definitely isn’t right now.

The Golden age was Final Fantasies IV - XI, that's just my opinion of course.

Back when it used to be about story and exploring. Now it's about linearity and action.

there was a ton of exploring and sidequests in FF12, especially if you took the time to hunt for all the rare monsters, the Hunts, finding the espers, etc.

I agree with the Golden Age for the most part.

The Golden Age was when Final Fantasy had nothing to do with Enix and was made by SquareSoft.

Square-Enix made the worst games in the main series in my opinion:

FFX-2
FFXI
FFXII
FFXIII
FFXIII-2
FFXIV

Yeah why in the hell is X-2 in the Golden Age :-? That entry should be burned and all copies removed from the market.

It's there because they consider everything that was in the PS1/PS2 era to be the Golden Age apparently...

X-2 was bad compared to it's great predecessors, but not bad enough to be removed from the market though.

do i have to say it?...

If they want Final fantasy to peak again, REMAKE FINAL FANTASY 7!

People were butthurt when they did the FF7 technical demo and said, we did it for the lulz.

if they remake that game the way the TD showed... people will LINE up at your factory!

ive never played FF7 but i know its the greatest Final Fantasy of all time.

they NEED to do it. or at LEAST make it a priority for when the PS4 releases.

I have played FF7 and it is a pain in the ass to play it on a PC nowadays, the controls are stiff and only by sorting through roughly 20 mods and patches can you get it to be enjoyable at a nice resolution with filtered textures.

You know what? I dont think that FF7 was the greatest one. It sure is great, but I think its also terribly overrated and hyped. Even people who havnt played the game say that its the best one. Mama Mia!

These were the golden age games imho:
FF6, FF7, FF8, FF9 and FF10

And I actually love all of them, I dont have any favorite.

you havent played vii so no opinion. its a great game dont get me wrong but vii and its compilation were enough. square enix needs to move on from vii and xiii for that matter and focus on something new and fresh. thats what final fantasy was about a series that tried something new everytime, now we have people going on bout a vii remake and two sequals to xiii that no one asked for. they need to move onto xv and bring something new to the table. just my two cents from a long time final fantasy fan.

Don't forget too that their best game (Vagrant Story - 2000) was set in Ivalice too. Stuff what Matsuno said later, it was Ivalice. Best. Game. Ever.

My favorite wasn't VII its actually my second favorite after final fantasy IX. It isn't about a remake at all (although you are right i would go line up at Sony's factory to get a copy, that's Sony's gold mine i think that's why they keep fanning the flames just in case they need to use it.) They definitely need characters you can can emotionally attached to, or some good twist's and turns like in FF9 where suddenly your in another planet O_O. For the last part i can't quite put my finger on it but their was also something else that even till this day makes me go back and play final fantasy over and over again even after all these years. The final fantasy series is just deteriorating i only played 5 minutes of FF XIII and it was unbearable i never played it again.

Yeah, definitely. PSX and PS2 were the golden age of gaming itself, not only FF. Glad to see that Square realizes it.
