That is the sounds of Ska-Punk band Goldfinger and their track, Superman, which is on Tony Hawk's original soundtrack. The song is a crystallised moment in time when I was in my early teens and this song came on in the game as I was doing a kickflip and it just fitted the place and time. I can almost sing all the lyrics in the song. So while the original games haven't exactly stayed the shape of our memories, the music still lingers on quite well. For example, if you're not a fan of the extreme sports genre, how about a bit of JRPG in your morning cereal?

One Winged Angel from Final Fantasy 7 is regarded as one of the most amazing pieces of video game orchestral music. I'm not even that big a fan of the series, but I could recognise this from the first five seconds of it. The way the music is soaring and frightening all at the same time, gives a sense of epic urgency and tension that you simply would not get from others.

So sticking with the theme of instrumentals, how about some stealthy music?

Yes, that's the original theme to the awesome Metal Gear Solid series. The dark and moody piece sets you up for something slightly sinister but also absolutely action packed, which sums up the series in a way. Of course, the original Playstation wasn't the only console on the market in the 90's, let's have a look at a bear and bird and for some reason some country music.

And of course, there were handhelds.

Super Mario Land was one of the first handheld title's I ever played with and every single piece of music and every sound effect echoes in my memory and probably won't stop till my ears bleed.

So what is the most memorable music from the 90's era? Is it some classic PS1 title no one's ever heard of? Or even is it just a piece of melodic enchantment that everyone knows?

There's no contestant that could best the soundtrack of Donkey Kong Country. It not only won awards but every piece was designed so perfectly for the level assigned to it.

Complete soundtrack? FFVII for me, hands down. Almost every track is masterfully constructed. Nobuo Uematsu is a genius. It's an absolute shame that being a composer of game music, he will never receive the recognition he deserves.

Individual game track? The main 007 theme from Goldeneye, Metal Gear Solid's version of Theme of Tara or Liberi Fatali from FFVIII.

Frick, whenever I played pro skater, I always restarted until Superman played. That was my jam.

'The Best Is Yet To Come', an Irish folk song, is 'the original theme to the MGS series'?
What does that sentence even mean? Not to mention it isn't 'stealthy', and it's not the main theme to any game in the series. It's the theme song for MGS1, but not the main theme. (MGS2's theme song was Can't Say Goodbye To Yesterday, and MGS3's was Snake Eater. Neither are main themes.)

Journalism, eh?
