The company has confirmed that the "network pass program” will begin with the release of Resistance 3.

resistance3

“We are always evaluating new programs for our online offering, and starting with Resistance 3 this September, we will be instituting a network pass program for PS3 games with online capabilities,” notes SCEE in a statement issued today.

“This program will be game-specific. Games that are a part of this program will include a single-use registration code that grants the account holder redeeming the code full online access for that title.

“This is an important initiative as it allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhancing premium online services across our first party game portfolio.”

The confirmation comes after a certain "PSN Pass" was spotted on a hardware bundle of Insomniac's upcoming shooter sequel. This isn't the first time Sony implemented something like this, the PSP releases of SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 3 and ModNation Racers also includes a similar program.

I guess PS3's online will officially be worse than 360's now.
It's almost like Sony wants their user and fanbases to hate them...

Really, you think this is whats gonna make PS3's online worse. It's already worse. I bought Black Ops to play on the PS3 with some buddies who have a PS3 and not a 360 and OMG, I can't play that crap on the PS3 its so laggy. Believe me it's not a PSN Pass thats going to make it crap, it already is!

How is it worst? You still get to play online for free as long as you don't a use copy of the game.

"How is it worst?", I said "worse".
It's surely not the worst, Wii owns that title, it's simply not as good as XBL(X-game chat, less lag, easy to manage, etc.)

So its exactly the same as what EA games have already been doing for like a couple years now? I don't see a problem with it. It's just helping developers profit from the used game market. As long as they do what some games do and allow you a "trial period" for a couple days to a week so if you rented or borrowed the game ur not screwed.

In essence, it's allowing the developers to profit from private sales that they're completely uninvolved with. It's incredibly slimy.

I hate this idea, there are two PS3's in my house with different accounts (me and my brother's). Which means that if he/I buys games with these sort of passes on the other won't be able to play on their own account (thus not trophies, and in some cases no multiple storyline saves).

If Uncharted 3 incorporates this I will, as they say, not be a happy bunny.

you could add your account to his and his account to your ps3 by creating a new user and signing in to it using existing account which is yours and his on both ps3's and simply share the pass its just as gamesharing...

+2 # Nope...ptspyder 2011-07-07 15:03
That wouldn't really work either, since only one person would be earning trophies. I personally have 3 ps3 in my house and have 5 legitimately unique users. This idea is crap, since it leaves 4 people out in the cold. If this is sony's business plan, pretty soon I will be telling them to go f*** themselves.

With gamesharing everyone who logs in still gets trophies.

but this isn't gamesharing, its a code unique to a PSN ID so as ptspyder states, only one would be able to achieve trophies. I have tried this with modnation racers and the sims 3.

Exactly, people should have told EA to shove it when they started to do this shit because, because everyone with only half a brain could have seen this coming.

Now that Sony is following suit people start nagging? Firstly, you should have nagged when EA thought of this shit, secondly, Just buy the games first hand and you're alright, or even, if you have to buy a pass for every game, chances are, you will still be off cheaper if you buy a second hand game plus the pass versus buying the game at full retail price.

Since Glyde started up and people can now sell their games for actual profit and buy used for real savings (unlike going to Gamestop where you sell a recent used title for $11-15 out of the $60 you paid two weeka ago, which they turn around and sell for $54.99 Used), the gaming comunity finally had a way to just buy and sell to one another with little effort, cutting out the greedy middle man.

With such a skeezy tactic, if Sony implements this on a wide array of games, it could effectively end the first time in our community where we have fairness and equality in our buying and selling.

It's just to much. If you buy a Sony brand TV and sell it, does Sony think that it's just a matter of time till they have the right to charge you an Ebay esc seller's fee? It shouldn't be allowed, hands down someone with authority over such business practices should be stepping in. I'd love to know if this is going to be doing on in Japan or the UK, since they've shot down skeevy BS from Sony US before.

It's not going to be a pretty gaming scene in a few months I get the feeling.

That's exactly right, and it's exactly why they're doing it. They're businesses, and they'll do whatever they can to squeeze another dollar out of your wallet. Pre-owned games don't give the original developers any money.

Yeah I know. And it's sick. Do they not care about the people working at the shops? They earn more than enough as it is from the initial purchases of the games. If they don't, then maybe they should make games worth buying in the first place!

Sony you have always been touted as a great thing for not charging your user-base for online play, what the hell this system is just as bad as Microsoft's online play but at the least we get the features out of Microsoft for our money. You better have a decent reason to warrant the purchase of these games at high dollar price and not only to "Be able to play online".

# RE: RE: Sony's 'Online Pass' is realluckymouse 2011-07-07 09:47
Let's break it down then, shall we?

PS3: Buy a game worth 60$ and we are ready to go and able to play online.
Xbox360: Buy a game worth 60$ and... wait we need Xboxlive membership too...

For the same price of a newly released game you will still be getting more value for your buck on PS3 as you are able to go online without paying extra fees.

Buy your games first hand and support the developers and publishers whose game you love.

"Buy your games first hand and support the developers and publishers whose game you love"

Not everyone wants to shell out 60$$ for a new game that they might not even like. This model also hurts places like Gamefly, not to mention the consumer.

Now if i was given a 100% money back guarantee that i would like the game it still wouldn't be enough to get me to buy some of this swill that they have been pushing on the consumer base over that last 2 console generations.

With the addition of online enabled game has also included the decline of the single player campaign. Games are shorter and have less content. Although it maybe on the disc you still need to buy it via market place.

Now if games were as rich in content as the publishers think they are then there wouldn't be 20 copies of the game sitting on the shelf @ gamestop next to new copies of the game on day 1 for 20% less.

Its the developers fault not the consumers. Make good content rich games and stop catering to just the online community and maybe your game will stay in my collection a lil longer.

Well, only buy games you know are worth it, check out the games at a friends house, check out reviews, wait for games to drop in price a little... Those are a few options ?

Anyway, I do agree with everything else you said though, the games industry is slowly but surely digging it's own grave like this.

# RE: RE: reallytepid 2011-07-08 11:07
Yes, it is.

Most of my friends only buy a game when they find it somewhere, used, for cheap. A friend of mine only just started playing oblivion (ps3 goty) because he found it for 8 bucks. A really great game, ignored for years, bought because he found it used, cheap. Maybe that sucks for Bethesda's oblivion sales... (lulz) but now he's extremely pumped for skyrim and he went out and pre-ordered a copy.

That's pretty much how I look at used games. For me, used games have always been an inexpensive way to experience games you may have missed in the last couple years. Then, if the devs put out another game in the near future, I go out and buy it

Just like how my other friends got into infamous 2 and uncharted 3 - they bought infamous and uc2 used and cheap, then they bought infamous 2 and pre-ordered uc3.

Used games sales don't really hurt sales anyways - especially if they promote new games sales in the future, which good games almost always do.

First off XBL is apple pie.
Second, if you notice, this is the net being capped, it says:

not

The one thing sony had going for them they just fu*ked themselves out of. My prediction: game sales will drop. Either in protest or because anything less than an amazing game will be passed up due to paying for online.

Example: (fake titles) battlefield 4 comes out and later let's just say modnation racers 2 at the same time. Well guess which one id wait for the price to go down on.....

So as many people have mentioned yes, this will definitely go a long way into putting holes in the pre-owned market.

But also most people don't seem to see that this would effectively help kill off the rental business as well for companies like Blockbuster, Gamefly etc as people that even rent the game won't be able to try out the online functionality of the game at all since they won't have a pass. I'm not going to RENT a game and then pay an additional cost to just try out the online function of said game.

I knew that EA and Activision slipping this in under the grid would create a bad precedent for gamers. Now other companies will follow suit for sure where they can make a few extra bucks.

How about perhaps making retailers pay a premium to the publishers when they sell a used copy of the game, or providing an INCENTIVE to buy the game new (free exclusive DLC, costumes, etc) instead of penalties to people who buy it used.

I think perhaps that consumers need to stand up for themselves in these situations and the next major title that wants to come out and create some sort of extra pass to use the base functions in the game, we simply boycott and not buy that particular title (especially if it's a big title like CoD etc.) You've only gotta do it once and hit them in the wallet to make them realize that this won't float past consumers. If they don't sell their 50 million copies of the title the'll definitely notice.

I am pretty sure that this will be messy to administer.. this sounds like a really bad idea - hope it dies like DRM (digital Rights Management) all these smart ideas to get a few more dollars from consumers .. I would happily pay these few dollars up front rather than go into this hell of accounts, Ps3's and Pass ownership .. it stinks!

I'm pretty sure the new Mortal Kombat on XBOX 360 had something like this. I had to enter a code that came with the game to get access to online features. Anyone who buys a used copy of that game will need to purchase that code to get online. I have never heard of Online Pass but that sounds the same to me. Am i wrong?

Maybe this will cause the stores that sell preowned games to cut their prices. There is no way they can sell a second hand recently released game anywhere near $60 when the customer can't access half of the game. So no more $55 second hand games.
