Sony working on bringing educational gaming to classrooms |

Sony's video game platforms aren't just for playing games. They're also being marketed as media players and, apparently, teaching aids.
SCEE senior VP Ray Maguire has told video game industry news site MCV that they have a few classroom-oriented projects in the works. One, a "specialist educational channel" called ConnectED that has examples of how teachers and students cn make use of Sony products like the PSP, LittleBigPlanet and the PlayStation Move motion controller, is already live.
Another project aimed for teachers is a Teacher Pack for LittleBigPlanet 2. The pack, which is currently being made by Media Molecule, will come with materials that should help teachers create and share curriculum-based levels that students can play through.
"The pack will be a really useful way of starting to track and develop interest and involvement in games based learning," said Maguire. "We hope that Media Molecule will have this created by the start of the summer term in May."
The biggest challenge facing Sony and other video gam developers and publishers who want to bring games and other game-related paraphernalia into a classroom setting lies in convincing various educational bodies and even parents to accept them as legitimate learning tools.
"Right now it's a big problem because games are not endorsed by the Department for Education and there is no clear commercial return on investment for game publishers," he said. "At the moment, we rely on inspirational teachers and schools who recognise that games or other rich media can provide stimulation, engagement and relevance."
It seems Sony's forays into educational content is already working, however, albeit on an admittedly small scale. Said Maguire, "There are many examples of brilliant teachers who have introduced games into the classroom under their own steam and are now reaping the rewards."

If Sony uses the same model as free PSN (plus doesnt count...) with learning as their first priority, then I welcome it. Otherwise, stay free, stay with edubuntu.
I'm not against Sony. I'm against doing things for the wrong reason.
Thanks again for the PS2 years!
