The U.S. House of Representatives held a hearing in Washington, DC earlier today regarding the recent PlayStation Network security breach, in which, Kazuo Hirai, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sony Computer Entertainment America, submitted written answers to address the questions posted by the subcommittee about the "large-scale, criminal cyber-attack" they have experienced.

In a post over at the official PlayStation Blog, Patrick Seybold, Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media, summarize Kaz response. He notes that in dealing with this cyber attack, the followed "four key principles:

  • Act with care and caution.
  • Provide relevant information to the public when it has been verified.
  • Take responsibility for our obligations to our customers.
  • Work with law enforcement authorities.

We also informed the subcommittee of the following:
  • Sony has been the victim of a very carefully planned, very professional, highly sophisticated criminal cyber attack.
  • We discovered that the intruders had planted a file on one of our Sony Online Entertainment servers named “Anonymous” with the words “We are Legion.”
  • By April 25, forensic teams were able to confirm the scope of the personal data they believed had been taken, and could not rule out whether credit card information had been accessed. On April 26, we notified customers of those facts.
  • As of today, the major credit card companies have not reported any fraudulent transactions that they believe are the direct result of this cyber attack.
  • Protecting individuals’ personal data is the highestpriority and ensuring that the Internet can be made secure for commerce is also essential. Worldwide, countries and businesses will have to come together to ensure the safety of commerce over the Internet and find ways to combat cybercrime and cyber terrorism.
  • We are taking a number of steps to prevent future breaches, including enhanced levels of data protection and encryption; enhanced ability to detect software intrusions, unauthorized access and unusual activity patterns; additional firewalls; establishment of a new data center in an undisclosed location with increased security; and the naming of a new Chief Information Security Officer.

He went on to add: "We told the subcommittee about our intent to offer complimentary identity theft protection to U.S. account holders and detailed the “Welcome Back” program that includes free downloads, 30 days of free membership in the PlayStation Plus premium subscription service; 30 days of free service for Music Unlimited subscribers; and extending PlayStation Plus and Music Unlimited subscriptions for the number of days services were unavailable.

Seybold reassured PSN subscribers that they "are working around the clock to have some PlayStation Network services restored and provide you with both the entertainment and the security you deserve."

I just need video games to make my life seem complete. The only pathetic person here is you. Why don't you walk over to SCEA headquaters and fix their problem? No? Then shut-up and deal with it like the rest of us!

they need to get the network up soon. the breach has shut down the PSN for 30 days which is pushing the envelope to the acceptable downtime after a disaster. granted this is only a free gaming and a paid rental and paid video service.

rather for it to be up and running all the way in my opinion. There is other things to do ya know. Sry for the people who can't find things to do, not my problem. But I rather have a secure network than a fucked up network that will go down as soon as it comes back up.

We discovered that the intruders had planted a file on one of our Sony Online Entertainment servers named “Anonymous” with the words “We are Legion.”

Interesting.

They recently stated that "they're not done yet" and every since this whole thing has went down,we haven't heard shit from them have we?As if all is good with them and sony.I was thinking about that a few days ago and thought it was a bit odd.

I know they did say "it wasn't us",but I'm pretty sure they don't all get together at some facility and plan these things out,and they are "anonymous" after all, just because one says that doesn't mean someone else doesn't consider themselves part of the group and nothing says they have to tell the truth.

I would kind of like to think it was them because from what I understand they're on our side so you would think they woud'nt be selling out peoples info.On the other hand,I'm not sure what they were trying to accomplish if it was them.

Idunno,i think im just confusing myself trying to figure it out.

# Rogue element...Kreationz 2011-05-07 15:59
Yup, I agree it was a separate or rogue element, just as any grassroots movement will be twisted by a few for their own purpose. It could have also been a separate hacker that isn't part of Anon. They likely would have left the same file to throw the law/Sony off and delay things enough for them to put their ill gotten gains to use.

Yes, it has been down a long time, but Sony needs to take their time while re-securing everything. Go outside! Or play a nice offline game ^.-
