Sony: It's not yet time for PS4

Says the PlayStation 3 is "really just hitting its stride."

It looks like we won't be seeing a PlayStation 3 successor anytime soon, well, at least judging by the latest comments made by PlayStation US boss Jack Tretton.

Tretton told Forbes that the Sony is currently focussing on the PlayStation 3 and its upcoming handheld, the PlayStation Vita.

"PlayStation 3 is really just hitting its stride," he said. "And technologically, I don’t think it’s possible to provide any advancement beyond what we have. What we’ve seen from the competition is trying to add features that already exist in PlayStation 3. We invested heavily in that, we rolled a very heavy rock up a steep hill, through the launch period."

"But now I think that all pays off, and we’ve got a long run way behind it," he continued. "So, I wouldn’t look for any discussion of a next generation PlayStation for quite some time."

Now what about Nintendo's new console?

"I think there’s ground to be carved out for everybody," says Tretton. "But I didn’t see anything about Nintendo’s announcement that said ‘Oh, we’d better get working on rolling out a new PlayStation here pretty soon."

"Our attitude is kind of ‘welcome to the party.’ If you’re looking at being a multimedia entertainment device, if you’re looking at high def gaming, that was 2006 for us."

Late last month, Masaru Kato, Sony's vice president and chief financial officer, revealed during an investor's meeting that they are already working on a new console. Microsoft is also rumoured to be readying a new console for a 2012 retail debut.

Note to all game hardware manufactuers: it's all about what you DO with the hardware, not the hardware itself, especially in the season we are in. Software and services, and not just games, but innovation either way. Also for future reference: iron out all of the hardware issues, set the price and feature set correctly, and innovate beyond just suped up processors and memory. It will save you a couple of years of loss which costs us in great software because devs are less likely to jump on board. There was no excuse for all of the hardware failure between MS and Sony on this generation. I don't recall that with any other gen. Sony's price out of the gate was also ridiculous. I'm mad that I can't somehow add PS2 compatibility *after the fact* which if they were innovative they could have done. Also, Nintendo got 85 million consoles over Sony and Microsoft that could have led to better software if they hadn't been asleep. And it was backwards compatible. Long story short, MS and Sony put out broken hardware so that they could keep money coming in while we bug tested and they fixed the problems.

Where Playstation and Xbox360 are trying to play catch up with Nintendo's 'casual' success, Nintendo is now trying to play catch up with the success the other two had with the more hardcore demographic.

And looking at what the Wii U is supposedly capable of, I don't think that Playstation nor Microsoft really 'need' to put out a new console, Nintendo's console doesn't do anything new that the PS3 wouldn't be able to pull off, especially if you look at the opportunities the PS Vita gives Playstation.

In essence, the PS Vita is the Wii U controller done right: decent analogue STICKS, touchscreen with multi-touch, a track pad, onboard memory to hold its on games.

It is just a matter of developers actually utilizing this concept.

PS Vita is a $250-$300 handheld. It only has 1 pair of L & R buttons, while you could probably make up fort this with the touch screen, you're still missing those 360-style triggers. A Multitouch screen on the Wii U would be nice, but that would drive up cost, and you wouldn't be able to use a stylus anymore. Why would a controller need on-board memory to store games anyway? Do we even know for sure that the PSVita can be used the same way a U-mote can? I can't really give a decent reply to the "Analog STICKS", comment, because I haven't used the PSvita or the U-mote. Have you?

just hitting it's stride? a majority of the original consoles didn't live to see the day. PS3 RROD. RIP fat ps3s.

PS3 didn't have RROD, 360 did, and that was far worse.

PS3 had the YLOD though.

yeah and YLOD is really rare compared to xbox PRODs.... its really the owners to blame if anyone got YLOD

Yeah, they said the same thing about the wii but on a rude manner and Boom! Wii Smash puny PS3 sales :-)....... I am pretty sure his trying to soften things by now, so later he says " yeah, we knew this and that ..adn we wanted to be innovative..etcetc.."

^He was probably talking about the PS Vita, or another crappy PS Phone.

I love my PS3. I don't see PS4 coming before 2017 or even after that. As long as amazing games like God of War, Uncharted and Final Fantasy keeps coming out the PS3 will keep rolling. But I can see Microsoft and Nintendo updating their consoles to include a Blu-Ray drive. Thats one of the biggest driving forces behind PS3 sales.

Sony has probably been doing R&D on the next gen Playstation console since 2006

spending millions researching what consumers want in the future and what might be technologically possible.

I'm still hoping that one day Video Games will be like in the .hack// series

virtual reality ftw!

Totaly agree its not time for any new consoles. It's what they do with them that counts. It's always the same, programmers just start getting good at making great games and then they bring out new hardware. The hardware should be pushed to it's limit before new hardware gets released. The best thing sony can do is add a Youtube app to PS3. Especially with HD support. After all the psvita will have youtube and it sucks ps3 is crap with something so simple.
