Sony Hitting New Lows

Yesterday we reported that Sega is indeed facing a slight revenue downhill over the last year, but how are things faring for the other end of the spectrum, Sony?

Not well.

Sony Corp says that they’ll lose around $17 billion this year. To put things into perspective, Samsung are putting three quarters of that amount into research for their devices.

Remember that this is obviously Sony as a whole, and not just their gaming divisions. Panasonic and Sharp also predict the world's biggest losses in their histories. Why are things so bad?

Masamitsu Ohki, a Japanese fund manager, says that Japan’s consumer electronics are in the toilet, ‘in total breakdown’ because they need to compete with ideas, not technology.

Samsung are on top in the market as far as losses and gains go.

To really put things into a harsher reality, Sony was worth over $100 billion in the year 2000. The PS2 was hot, media players were on the horizon of a breakthrough and DVD’s were going to be big.

Now in 2012, the company is valued at $18 billion. The fund manager is right about focusing on ideas instead of just technology: Apple had a net income of $13 billion in the last quarter.

i dont think it will, but this is sony overall it doesnt mean just playstation, i dont think vita is gonna do anything, if it does it is gonna take more money out of sony, it wasant selling and still not selling in japan, its only gonna sell a lot after is fully hacked, u will c... like the psp, ps3 etc...in the gaming department

Nope won't be buying the vita, not really intrested in a $250 handheld with after paying $600 for the PS3, $ony taking away the features that were advertised with the device. This company has left a sour taste in my mouth, so I'll be looking elsewhere for my handheld needs. # apple?

lol, this is a joke, right? Man, why am I reading Qj posts again...

Sony have 155 billions of assets and this year they had 86 billions of dollars of revenu. Not, a total profit loss of 2 billions isn't good at all, but it's far from "the toilet". All major electronic companies are reporting losses some years, then it's the reverse situation. It's always hard to say in advance since high tech is the world of small margins.

Sony is having some trouble these times, but it's far from down into the toilet. Most divisions are making tons of profits, even if as a hole, counting the 168 000 employees, they made minus 2G$ this year. Maybe they will try to restructurate, keeping less executives and some changes in plans, like all companies do from times to times.

Already bought mine, the 4g model, also has a 100$ best buy card ready when the 32gb memory cards come out, for some sad reason you can't pre order from them.

If now Sony learns to think outside of the box and improve the browser, appstore and add more value to the great device it will for sure sell like butter.

1. Don't repress your customer base.
2. Don't revoke compatability and features from your products.
3. Interact with customer base on bugs/features/improvements for future updates and products.

Before they "think outside the box", they should brush up on these core business aspects. Customer service is not a department, it's an attitude.

Sony have lost a LOT of faith in it's customer base after the PS3's feature removals and "tough luck/ah well" attitude to lost personal data due to failing consoles. The VITA is an expensive kids toy with limited appeal beyond puberty and the rapid advance in smartphones (inc. and esp. the Xperia Play) have given everyone who likes to have gaming on the move and in their pocket the answer.

Can't personally see why the VITA was needed and why it will succeed at the rediculous price in the current climate with parents more worried about the forever increasing cost of living and if they'll have a job to go to next week.

Sony has been in the crapper for a long time now. This is nothing new.

In fact the new CEO (I think that's the right position) is looking to make major changes.

Like i've always said Sony just doesn't know how to properly run a console, with Ps1&2 there was nothing to do but manufacture and promote the consoles and they had incredibly easy success, then with Ps3 they had some genuine competition and had to keep working to offer new features, but all they do is a mediocre job and constantly piss people off, and i know their new CEO said things really need to change but a lot of the management they saying they don't want to change, and i remember this is the same kind of crap that went on before Sega pulled out of the console game when the Japanese and US divisions kept arguing about consoles.

Sony have shot themselves in the foot with the Vita, high price, lousy battery life, no memcard and expensive games just won't cut it anymore, its obvious smartphones/ipod touch will keep kicking their butt. I was tempted to pre-order but even with the Amazon deal its still £234, with the premium games going for ~£40.

I will continue to use my PSP 3k esp. as FF Type 0 is getting a Western release :)

Phones suck and will never be adequate gaming devices, but I don't want a Vita because Sony loses focus on gaming and places too much into trash nobody wants like movies and music. Focus on one thing and do it right, that's why the PS1 and PS2 did so well. And their stupid useless updates aren't helping either, I want LESS features done better.
