Sony Dropping PSN Game Share Limit |
Listed in: News Tags: psn sharing
Sony just announced that the PSN share limit is changing from five devices to two as of November 18th. Any content purchased on or after that date will only be available for sharing across two devices, a stark change from the previous policy. You’ll still be able to play two PSPs and two PS3’s, bringing the potential total to four, but that’s only for games that can operate on both systems. Otherwise, you’re stuck with just the two.

To clarify: PSN games downloaded after November 18th can be shared to two PS3 systems and two PSPs, down from the original number of five. Sony is also adding a web tool that finally allows you to deactivate your account from old systems, saving you the hassle of a long customer support call in the event that your PS3 fails and you need to recover your games on a new console.
Game sharing was always one of the more interesting things that PSN brought to the table, allowing you to “bring” games to your friend’s house or share them with a family member’s account when you were home for the holidays. While reports of abuse certainly came up, most gamers probably used the system exactly as intended.
Paring down the total number of systems probably won’t impact too many people, but it’s still a strange thing to do so far into the development cycle. The comments section of the PlayStation blog shows a pretty clear resistance to the idea, so we’ll just have to see how it plays out.
What do you think of the new reduced sharing limit?

Since it's possible to deactivate your console on psn, you can still download games on more than two systems: you just have to give up your downloads on one system to enable them on another.

THANK GOODNESS FOR ......DUPLEX.....!!!!!
SONY really know how to turn their customers against them, don't they....
I rekon they should change their slogan from...." It's a SONY " to " IT'S A FUK'UP " cause that's all they ever do.
Don't U think!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!

I also believe that any true supporter of any given product would chose to purchase over stealing. I won't pirate a game I don't own because I want the industry to succeed. The same goes with donating to museums and churches. That's also the primary purpose of the stock market.

Yes, but they've made so many moves like this it's insane.
Any breaks the customers get, are taken away by Sony.

Not a good move at all for their most dedicated customers as I no longer have any incentive to purchase PSN content. But at least I can still pass discs around the house...

that has been the reason for me buying a coupl of PSN games, which will sadly not be possible anymore. Now its buy before you try it. Oh well I guess, Sony won't make any money off this policy change and are likely to lose money to disgruntled people, and i don't blame them.
I Hate Microsoft and I think Nintendo (for now) is just fucking dumb. But man Sony you are making it hard to even tolerate you lately, Google needs to save me from the console wars.

How may DLC games have you purchased because someone shared it with you or vice versa? Did you delete it from your system when the friend left your house? I know too few people who are actually that good inside. Maybe you are.

It'll be a non issue to those people that buy their own games.

You have 2 therefore you are covered.

If you go to your parents' house, deactivate one of the PS3's at your place and activate the one at your parents' house, easy as pie.
Want your parents and your brother to play the same game as you simultaniously? Can't do that with a disc game, why would you be able to do it with a downloaded game?

if you go and buy MW3 on tuesday and go home and want to play with a friend who doesnt have it yet, whats the options? someone will either buy the second copy so he can play or nobody end of story. now go buy the download of black ops now of psn. your friend doesnt have and wants to play with you. you got a extra copy of the game you can lend him!
so ppl stop acting like sonys always doing wrong, when the do this stuff its like a consequence that was bound to happen, thats why psn isnt close to as profitable in game sales as xbox live smh

QJ's description wasn't crystal clear, so I'm pretty worried this whole thing might end up feeling like a noose tied around my neck.

Now, if I bought a copy of a game on a disc rather than DLC, I can eject it and move it into the next system. Hell, if I want to, I can loan it to any number of my gamer friends and nobody would be the wiser. Game sharing is part of gaming culture, always has been.
5 systems was not generally necessary, but 2 is too few. I dont think its very fair that I will have to go through the dance of deactivating and reactivating multiple systems as frequently as daily. That said, an improvement to the system deactivation procedures has been badly needed.

i think it's lame that this happening. not because i'm a pirate or anything like that, but it was just cool to know you could do that.

Just take your one PS3 to each room and no need to worry about transferring this and that.

I spend it on 3 consoles, If I want 5, is that your problem?

we are in a time where families can't share one system now i take it based on some of the comments here.
as far as "Showing a friend" a game you bought off the psn and signing onto HIS/HERS PS3 with YOUR USER ID is the stupidest thing i heard, but maybe because im oldschool. I lug my own system with me. all it takes is the console, hell no dragging cords around too if your friend already has the hook ups. I've been doing that for years and its worked out greatly. there's just to much to ask for just one reply so...
may i ask, "what is a family to you? is it where everyone owns it or the individual? Can you not wait for your turn to play?"
