Sony Dropping PSN Game Share Limit

Ó

Sony just announced that the PSN share limit is changing from five devices to two as of November 18th. Any content purchased on or after that date will only be available for sharing across two devices, a stark change from the previous policy. You’ll still be able to play two PSPs and two PS3’s, bringing the potential total to four, but that’s only for games that can operate on both systems. Otherwise, you’re stuck with just the two.

mfpsn2

To clarify: PSN games downloaded after November 18th can be shared to two PS3 systems and two PSPs, down from the original number of five. Sony is also adding a web tool that finally allows you to deactivate your account from old systems, saving you the hassle of a long customer support call in the event that your PS3 fails and you need to recover your games on a new console.

Game sharing was always one of the more interesting things that PSN brought to the table, allowing you to “bring” games to your friend’s house or share them with a family member’s account when you were home for the holidays. While reports of abuse certainly came up, most gamers probably used the system exactly as intended.

Paring down the total number of systems probably won’t impact too many people, but it’s still a strange thing to do so far into the development cycle. The comments section of the PlayStation blog shows a pretty clear resistance to the idea, so we’ll just have to see how it plays out.

What do you think of the new reduced sharing limit?

Looks like the PS3 is losing it's benefits left, right, up, and down.

I agree for the most part, but honestly the game sharing thing always seemed more than fair to me. There's no reason for them to allow you to download a game on five systems from a single purchase. Most of the people who used the feature were abusing it to give friends pirated copies.

Since it's possible to deactivate your console on psn, you can still download games on more than two systems: you just have to give up your downloads on one system to enable them on another.

I am guessing you don't have a family with a couple of media areas. I could easily have 3 ps3's in the house if I wanted and now I would have to buy the games twice and have different accounts.

well 360 and wii is worse, 60 can only have on one console at a time, and wii saves on the console which mean you can never have on more then one console at a time

Yeah I think 2 PS3s is a good compromise, sadly one of my PS3s died, so right now I have my account registered in 3 different PS3, the new one, the old one and one at my parent's house but I don't know where to deactivate the dead one, I looked in the PSN website but I see no option there, if anyone can help me I would certainly appreciate it.

Ugh, atleast it doesnt affect the ones before. I guess Im not buying PSN games anymore. It's hard enough to convince my friends to also play they game now I'd probably have to ask them to purchase it too. Eh, no more impulse psn purchases for sure. PS seems to be losing many of its features overtime, either by firmware or hardware so called "upgrades". They keep removing the less used features but dont seem to compensate by adding anything new. Good luck Sony, you've pissed off a lot of people.

THANK GOODNESS FOR ......DUPLEX.....!!!!!

SONY really know how to turn their customers against them, don't they....

I rekon they should change their slogan from...." It's a SONY " to " IT'S A FUK'UP " cause that's all they ever do.

Don't U think!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!

I think it's a smart move on Sony's part. Sharing among friends so you don't all have to buy is stealing. Why let people give their games away?

I also believe that any true supporter of any given product would chose to purchase over stealing. I won't pirate a game I don't own because I want the industry to succeed. The same goes with donating to museums and churches. That's also the primary purpose of the stock market.

Yes, but they've made so many moves like this it's insane.

Any breaks the customers get, are taken away by Sony.

not everyone who has a use for the old share limit is a thief. I personally have a FAMILY with 4 PS3s and over 100 digital games but now half the consoles are useless? Seems they were just downgraded to glorified Bluray players now.

Not a good move at all for their most dedicated customers as I no longer have any incentive to purchase PSN content. But at least I can still pass discs around the house...

This just means that i will never be able to show my friends this fun new game i have been playing on PSN and try and get them to buy it... nope not going to happen anymore because i probably won't be able to start it up on their system. I feel this ruins being able to advertise the game to your friends... and honestly saying that someone is pirating the game when they give it to a friend is almost silly, they would never have bought the game in the first place the only reason they had it was likely because some annoying friend FORCED them to dowload it with their account and say try it, its fun.

that has been the reason for me buying a coupl of PSN games, which will sadly not be possible anymore. Now its buy before you try it. Oh well I guess, Sony won't make any money off this policy change and are likely to lose money to disgruntled people, and i don't blame them.

I Hate Microsoft and I think Nintendo (for now) is just fucking dumb. But man Sony you are making it hard to even tolerate you lately, Google needs to save me from the console wars.

Game demos? That's one way you can test games, reviews and video footage is another.

How may DLC games have you purchased because someone shared it with you or vice versa? Did you delete it from your system when the friend left your house? I know too few people who are actually that good inside. Maybe you are.

oh really.. i believe sony should focus on ADDING more features but, they're obviously too busy dwelling on removing old features.. that's not very productive is it? they should be trying to improve the console that the consumer paid $500 for but, instead they'll remove features on a monthly basis until there is virtually nothing left but a little plastic knub.. remember when they killed the backwards compatibility to "cut production costs"? yea.. more like add five million dollars directly in my pocket costs

It'll be a non issue to those people that buy their own games.

Well, since they are your games, I don't see any problem?

If you go to your parents' house, deactivate one of the PS3's at your place and activate the one at your parents' house, easy as pie.

Want your parents and your brother to play the same game as you simultaniously? Can't do that with a disc game, why would you be able to do it with a downloaded game?

i understand their point but i cant understand why they always have to first put a feature then they take it back it is really not shameful. They should have realized from the conception of psn that 5 is too many or they should have discarded the idea of gamesharing straight away but this thing of removing an already present feature upsets me

this all i will say big deal. technically, you are paying for one game or dlc for the system, but you got 5 for it and now they cuz it down to 2 big whoop. as long as you can deactivate old consoles through the pc.

if you go and buy MW3 on tuesday and go home and want to play with a friend who doesnt have it yet, whats the options? someone will either buy the second copy so he can play or nobody end of story. now go buy the download of black ops now of psn. your friend doesnt have and wants to play with you. you got a extra copy of the game you can lend him!

so ppl stop acting like sonys always doing wrong, when the do this stuff its like a consequence that was bound to happen, thats why psn isnt close to as profitable in game sales as xbox live smh

Exactly this. As long as consoles can ALWAYS be deactivated remotely, then it's all good by me; my PS3's HDD died a few months ago, and when I replaced it I had no way of deactivating everything.

QJ's description wasn't crystal clear, so I'm pretty worried this whole thing might end up feeling like a noose tied around my neck.

I see a lot of judgement from some of the members here, but consider this - I own 3 systems in my single home - 1 in the living room, 1 in the bed room, and 1 in the game room. I frequently use all three systems in the same day. Since I am a plus member, my game saves are shared instantly across all consoles nightly, making this even easier.

Now, if I bought a copy of a game on a disc rather than DLC, I can eject it and move it into the next system. Hell, if I want to, I can loan it to any number of my gamer friends and nobody would be the wiser. Game sharing is part of gaming culture, always has been.

5 systems was not generally necessary, but 2 is too few. I dont think its very fair that I will have to go through the dance of deactivating and reactivating multiple systems as frequently as daily. That said, an improvement to the system deactivation procedures has been badly needed.

a disc can only be used one place at a time, a download can be used 2 places at a time, your account styll has the 3 accounts activated on consoles for psn plus and you can still use the psn through all 3 you just gotta deactivate one when you wanna play on the one deactivated, and im guessing game rooms for when your with friends right? so just keep it deactivated till the time friends come

we must really live in a world where everyone gets butthurt over this sort of thing. from what i get out of this, is a feature thats been abused quite often. more over the results look bad for companies. why in the world would you have more then 1 ps3 is beyond me. one is more then enough. how many ataris, neses, genesis, sneses, and n64 did everyone have, more then one? that overkill if you ask me! i have brothers that owned those systems.
we are in a time where families can't share one system now i take it based on some of the comments here.

as far as "Showing a friend" a game you bought off the psn and signing onto HIS/HERS PS3 with YOUR USER ID is the stupidest thing i heard, but maybe because im oldschool. I lug my own system with me. all it takes is the console, hell no dragging cords around too if your friend already has the hook ups. I've been doing that for years and its worked out greatly. there's just to much to ask for just one reply so...

may i ask, "what is a family to you? is it where everyone owns it or the individual? Can you not wait for your turn to play?"

I think it is funny that people who game share are basically called "pirates" because they let their friends play a psn or ps3 game that we bought. This does suck, but I understand it. It does affect me to a point just because I share with a few friends. Not everyone has the cash all the time to go buy something off the PSN that we really wanted. One of us buys it, and then we gameshare it till you can buy the game. Now i know I am going to get flammed for something about money, but you know, it is harder and harder to keep up the habit. I care that Sony did this and at the same time I don't care. i think 3 though would be a great # for this.

Have fun paying 60 a year just to pay 8 a month to watch Netflix. Also, no game sharing whatsoever. It's 2013, they reduced the sharing limit. I read a lot of comments saying people need to stop whining. But the prices psn offer for games is higher than the standard price. I think most people are attacked by this and that's mainly a reason why they share the game. If the prices were equal to the standard prices than these users wouldn't even bother to leave a comment here. The games psn offers aren't even going through pricing procedures(stat ion a-b-c-d) they go straighly from a to b. Company to User. Piracy is a bad thing, but by doing this. They are just getting more of it.
