Sony does support hacking -- but of a different kind

The whole George Hotz drama may be over, but it's definitely one experience that Sony will not be forgetting any time soon.

sony_make_believe_logo

If there's anything that they'd want people to realize from that experience, though, is that Sony as a company is not completely against hacking. Nay, in fact, they support it. Just that, it's not the kind of hacking that people would normally think of when the H word is uttered.

Said Jack Tretton in an interview with New York Times when asked if "Sony wants to deter customers from modifying the PlayStation 3,":

"No, there's a real misnomer there, we embrace independent game development; if you call that hacking, then we embrace that. We give people tools that let them create new experiences. What I don't think we are in support of is someone trying to hack our device to pirate software and possibly collapse the platform."

Sony has been involved in a whirlwind of hackery drama this year, first with PS3 hacker George Hotz, which eventually ended in a settlement, and then with the highly publicized PSN security breach.

So is Sony saying if people write homebrew games and emulators they will support them and sign the software?

kinda, I think they mean like what realtech VR did.

they made a homebrew demo of no gravity and it was such a success that they can now create official psn games. Although they did have to buy a dev kit and they still need the support of a publisher.

No, they're saying indie devs are supported like on XBL indie games. They seem not to understand that it's not hacking when you are given the tools...I doubt they'll ever support user-made apps.

You do realize that Sony has been in favor of a jailbreak since the PSP, however they keep their platforms locked for the sole purpose of preventing piracy and wrecking online gaming. They support the jailbreak software that isn't designed to steal and cheat but, there are far more of those then the ones who actually make software.

(it's just not their business model)

Bullshit.

If they weren't actually against they'd allow homebrew apps/games on PS3/PSP, but nope, they don't.

Bunch of lousy liars.

At least thanks for the 4 PS3 full free games from the welcome package. :-)

Hacking and Jailbreaking are 2 VERY different things!

Anyway, I think they finally realised homebrew devs are the way to go, hence PS Suite for the Vita being added.

I support hacking. and i am proud of it, but lately a lot of hackers have gone too far. the psn attack was unnecessary. it affected the users as much as the company.
and I KNOW and SEEN enough to say that these hackers are HIPPOCRATES because they ARE FAN of the whole play station family. unknowingly they are destroying what they love most.

what will happen if one day sony decides to cut down the platform and discontinue any brand of the console?

these hackers rant about taking down the company. im serious it gets ridicules down in there forums, each hacker almost all of them buy like 8 ps3 consoles or MORE EACH.

why ? because they sometimes break the console and sometimes they work on a totally different thing at the same time. really ? that much money on something they love doing and why the play station ?
because they are fans.

i had a discussion with a hardcore supporter one day, he called me a Hippocrates because i actually liked the news of the anonymous suspect arrested.
he said that sony's been throwing hackers to the jail.

then i asked... NAME one.

hippocrates (of Kos) = ancient greek physician and thought to be father of the hippocratic oath although the document has since been found to be written after his death around 370 BC.

hippocrite = a person who acts in contradiction to stated beliefs or feelings.

They dropped the price of their dev kits to $2000 a long time ago. But I digress.

it's not an issue of homebrew; the issue is using such means to pirate.

So why did they remove linux again?

IIRC his Linux hack could merely gain RSX access and dump RAM and Sony removed OOS. Later Geohot's hack merely allowed homebrew, any piracy had to require someone else's CFW or user modification.

So now the only way to get homebrew on >3.15 is to hack it.

If Sony really support "hackers" then shouldn't they at the very least have something like XNA or the app store?

Or better yet a native game OS homebrew launcher which means sony can patch flaws, use a modified SDK to prevent piracy and allow easy to develop/release homebrew.

exactly. geohot specifically noted that his form of breaking into the ps3 software was not for piracy, but to open up the system for upcoming developers to create new software for homebrew purposes. may i say WTFCONTRODICTIO N!! geohot did go a different route by allowing ps3's to be homebrewed, but isnt his technique a little bit cheaper on the upcoming indie devs that would like to get their games published but cant afford the dev-kit to make sure their product even worked? fffffuuuuuuuu sony!

I used to like modifying my stuff, but now I quit modding PSPs (now on legit F/W) and I would never mod my PS3.

Once a nice place full of interesting developments like emulators and homebrew games, it's now a mess of kids using "homebrew" as an excuse for ISO downloading.

When Homebrew FINALLY separates itself from piracy THEN that would be real progress.

This is just Sony's PR department desperately trying to stop some of the hate being targeted at them, because come on cherry picking the best and most popular homebrew and then getting it developed further isn't even remotely like homebrew, it's just something that happens with tens of thousands of apps on app store and Android market all the time, Sony can only claim to support homebrew if the do a free restricted SDK and make some effort to promote it.

Actually thinking about it Sony did once sort of support homebrew with that old Ps1 Net Yaroze dev kit, because i remember a competition in the Official Playstation magazine where people who bought it could enter their own games and they get given free on the cover disk and get published if they win, but that w as over a decade ago and Sony's just turned to a tight arsed shit since then.

As a Homebrew developer myself. The ONLY major console supporting Homebrew (not "hacking") is the XBOX 360! I can make a game for it for under $500 and don't need special hardware at all! I can even publish it on XLIG without any upfront cost. If it's good enough I can get it on Live! Sony support goes as far as let us check it out and approved it and then if WE like WE will publish it. That's indie(small company) development, but a far cry from supporting homebrew(indivi dual) development. My personal boycott of Sony still stands! What I want?
Drop the Graf lawsuit, Open it back up to support linux, give us an SDK(with RSX access) and a market. Then see what happens! Your fan base among developers will explode! No one will care about "hacking" except for illegal purposes and then go right on ahead an sue the fuck out of them!

they stopped the first one because they were effecting the customers more than the company itself, and they realized that. then they released a publis appology

i agree with sony as far as not wanting people to ruin the system with piracy and completely destroy what little chance they have of turning a profit on each unit, however what would the harm be in giving people the tools and a forum to create and share games and apps for free licensed to every individual who buys a system. like having a program on the psv that allows you to run the "homebrew" software created by us with the program, kinda in the way the old ir shell software did but without letting the users compromise the security of the system itself.

That's sort of what Sony did with OtherOS giving people chance to do something extra with Ps3 and "cleverly" at the same time giving less reason to hack the system, but the the Sony execs stepped in and asked who the Hell had this good idea? it's ruining the name of Sony and now take this sword and you know what to do with it.

THE ONLY thing geohot did was open kernal mode up and made a cfw that allowed unsigned code. Some one later came and made an iso loader and ripper that ran on it. Before that the ps3 had a usb key that would allow all of the above and was what had been used for piracy even before the keys were out. The real thing he did was eliminate the need for a usb stick to be in the ps3 at all times and allowed a newer firmware than what the usb key could hack.

From a PSP user's standpoint on the war against hacking/CFW by Sony.

Oh this again. "CFW is all just piracy piracy piracy we're 100% against it". DUDE. You have said you can't get all PSP games on the PSN. D'you expect us to run off the slow UMD for the rest of our lives?!! Or get a OFW PSPGo which has a limited game selection on the PSN??! That is the reason I have jumped to CFW. That and the PSP is an awesome media player. Emulation means nothing to me, I already own all of the handhelds/consoles...
FYI I buy my own UMDs and self rip them. Could you work harder to get PSP titles on the PSN? Especially since you have said the PSVita is backwards compatible with the PSP and supposedly unhackable. If you got all of my bought UMD only games on PSN (and ensure that the PSP titles left for this year make it to the PSN too) and somehow got an exchange program, such as exchanging UMD's for PSN codes, I will quit CFW. I'm serious.

Continuing to roll out security firmware updates is pointless. If you had to do it, put the firmwares with the UMD games/PSN games only instead of releasing garbage to the public when they expect something out of an OFW update. What's the point anyway. What is this "(piracy will) collapse the platform" You've been saying this for years. You've already lost to the war against the pirates, they have a whole backload of 1000,2000,3000,Gos and Exploits. Hell the Sony stores here seem deserted except for their TV/Camera section everyone is going to hacker shops to buy the old hackable stuff. They will forever win, and you have to accept the fact and move on instead of being a bitch to homebrew devs who somehow create games like Lamecraft yet don't come to you. Or you don't come to them. "We support Indie Devs".
Something must be wrong.
The PSP is still very much alive as people (even pirates) will still buy UMDs if the game is good. Stop wasting your time trying to win a futile war. Or more aptly, a zero-sum war.

In terms of hacking. You've not supportive. What about enlisting their help to add their wonderful plugins. Like in-game time HUD.prx. Supporting custom CTF themes. Supporting adhoctousb xlinkkai officially. Heck, if you can get the licensing, GoTube Youtube on the Go (lame pun) supported officially! And the PSPRadio which has long been neglected yet supported and tweaked by "hackers"!
Web browser "hacks" that speed up your version of it! I bet xlinkkai would boost sales of the PSP if it was supported officially!
Nah you haven't did that yet.

Just my thoughts 8)
