Sony has let loose some gameplay and tech details about Naughty Dog's third Uncharted entry, Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. Among the many bullet points the press release mentions is that the game was made with 3D support in mind right from the start of development. The 3D support was also bult from the ground up and fully integrated into Naughty Dog Engine 3.0
The 3D effects aren't just there to make the game look pretty and enhance the cinematic set piece moments, too. 3D support reportedly leads to more precise aiming especially around corners and better judgement of depth during traversal sequences. Sony also revealed that the optimizations and techonology that was needed to enable 3D support in Uncharted 3 also led to benefits for the vanilla 2D experience.
The announcement also mentions gameplay tidbits covered by the fire technology used in the game. In Uncharted 3, fire actually affects the environment. It changes traversal opportunities and both creates and removes cover in combat situations. Naughty Dog has also added dozens of contextual animations for whenever Drake steps in, stands near, or takes cover near a blaze.
As for the graphics, the game's particle system was overhauled to allow the increase in number of effects and overdraw required for fire. Drake, Suly, and other characters have also been given additional animation layers to ground them in the environment and what is happening around them.
The PS3 exclusive Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception sneaks into retail on November 1 in North America and on November 4 in Europe.
