Somebody Decided a Battleship Movie Tie-in Game was a Good Idea |
Listed in: News Tags: Activision, battleship, double helix

Somehow the movie coming out about an alien invasion from the sea (maybe it's some kind of Atlantis thing) has something to do with the old Battleship board game. I don't get the demographics for this movie, but whatever. They're making a video game out of the damn thing too.
The game will be out May 15th in the US and is being developed by Double Helix and published by Activision and what they're saying is that it will be a blend of tactical naval combat ala the original board game and it will have some FPS gameplay thrown in for good measure. You will be Cole Mathis, an elite demolitions specialist with a very trite name who has to contend with an extraterrestrial threat on the Hawaiian archipelago.
So the ship-to-ship combat is being called the "siege on the sea" and the FPS elements are called "the war on the shore." Yikes. Apparently you'll be able to seamlessly switch between the two, switching to "Battle Command" mode if you need to light up enemy positions when your FPS-ing.
I'm pretty open-minded and I'm pretty easily entertained - especially if I'm just renting a game versus buying - but I'm pretty sure this will suck donkey balls. Meanwhile, I'll be waiting for Chutes & Ladders starring Channing Tatum as Porter Nash, a down-on-his-luck cop who has to chase down a rogue construction equipment salesman played by Nicolas Cage.
I must admit, every time I think of Battleship I think of the scene below from Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle.
