SOCOM 4: Not so fast with those pre-owned copies

If developers and publishers were to have it their way, they'd rather you buy a firsthand original copy of their games. Zipper Interactive is clearly no different from the others as they have put up a system in SOCOM 4 which should compel you to do exactly just that.

SOCOM Pro, as they call it, is the new key feature that will give access to a slew of game features exclusively to firsthand owners. As usual, a redeem code will be included in the game copy, at the back of hte instruction manual, which will then be entered via the PSN.

If your registration is a success (which it should be, assuming you got it firsthand), you will then be able to access the Pro Custom Game queues. Basically, this is a ranking of the playlists where Zipper will add in updates for as long as SOCOM 4 is alive and kicking. Once the redeem code is used, you cannot use it again, and therefore, second-hand owners will not be able to access the Pro Custom Game queues. Unless, of course, the firsthand owner did not bother using it -- which would actually be just insane.

On top of that, two new weapons will also be given away for those with the code: the M-16 (for Spec Ops) and the AK-47 (for the Insurgents).

The other limiting thing is that as SOCOM 4 plays out, second-hand owners will find themselves locked out of "exclusive multiplayer maps, various co-op additions, dedicated [Pro] leaderboards, and more..."

If it really can't be helped and you really can only buy second hand, but would want access to this, you can do so for a price of US$ 14.99.

Yeah, and used car sales kill the automotive industry too. You don't see Ford, GM, and Chrysler disabling the heaters and air conditioners in their cars for used buyers do you? There's no difference buying a used game or used car. They just want to bitch and moan. So when are we gonna start crushing used cars so everyone has to buy new?

You guys do realize the reason they do this is because the publisher makes no money off a used game sale.

Used game sales are as bad as piracy in the eyes of a publisher.

In the eyes of the publisher, sure. But in the eyes of American law, this might just be violating the first sale doctrine.

The first sale dotrine needs to be updated to deal with software. Since the first sale doctrine only deal with physical products, it's easy to create a loophole on the digital side without technically violating the doctrine.

I love when i see something like "exclusive Multiplayer maps!" .... do they not realize that all it does is splinter the online community? Its the reason that historically battlefield games with their DLC and expansion packs end up relatively unplayed after a few months. If not everyone has the game your sticking yourself instantly into a smaller queue ... fail.

they should spend more time making a quality game. that beta was terrible
