Sega picks up Doctor Who MMO and Puzzle Pirates |

Sega used to be in the hardware business, remember back in 1999? Remember when the Dreamcast was probably the best console ever but no one bought it because they wanted to play DVD's on something Sony made? It was a different time, you wouldn't understand man, American Beauty was too deep and everyone loved The New Radicals...different times. Anyway, Sega is now a fantastic publisher of games that are not just made of blue hedgehogs and RPG's, they also like to delve into Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey stuff as they will be publishing the online MMO based on the longest running science fiction series, Doctor Who.
I'm a big fan of Doctor Who but not of MMORPG's, but I have to say if they want me in, they've probably got me. Worlds in Time, originally made by the BBC and worked on by Three Rings is available in the UK but it looks like Sega's expansion into digital and online gaming has swallowed up those three rings (insert-Sonic-joke-here) and will be selling and distributing the game some time in the near future to international players.
Also on the swallowing list is the fun for the whole family MMO (yeah, that's not contradictory) Puzzle Pirates. The game actually has done significantly well with fans, critics and people who like to spend money alike. The game actually comes off the game Spiral Knights which won the 2011 GDC online award for best online game. The properties of both Doctor Who and Spiral Knights are incredibly hot right now and could easily blow up in 2012.
Sega said about the acquisition that they knew from the initial time they saw Spiral Knights that the guys working at Three Rings were not just talented but unique in their talents. Haruki Satomi from Sega went on to say they're proud of welcoming them to the big Japanese family and they can't wait to see what they make.
Daniel James, the CEO for Three Rings, was equally excited saying how lucky they were that Sega found them and that they both "respect" their identity and "share" their passion towards "developing engaging and quality games", they, like Sega, look forward to working together.
Sega and Three Rings could work really well together. Sega has been doing well this year and will hopefully continue into 2012. They finally got Sonic right, with Sonic Generations and their third party games, both on and offline have been selling like mad. Just ask the creators of Football Manager in the UK.
