SCEE Blog Manager: PSN Pass is just following industry directions

Despite the many explanations, the PSN Pass remains to be a hot topic everywhere. Right on the Sony forums, users still cannot contain their derision for the said plan, making it plain to see.

SCEE Blog Manager James Gallagher has been witness to all the blasting tirade, and so has spoken out in defense of the said PSN Pass. "There is a lot of heated discussion around this topic and I can see the points on both sides," he started.

"At the end of the day, it's the direction the industry is heading in and seeing the bargains you can pick up in the used game market now, I think customers can still pick up a second hand game, and an online pass, and still be getting a good deal."

News of the PSN Pass first broke out when a picture of Resistance 3's boxart carried the curious PSN Pass label. Immediately, reactions - most of them not very welcoming - from gamers poured in, and analysts soon jumped on board, qualifying it as a poorly timed move by Sony.

i'd have to agree that it's definitely looking like the definitive trend in the industry now.

a trend is a tendency, not a forced path. Just because some publishers are trying to shove their passes on our faces it doesn't make it a trend, "imposition" is the correct word they should use.

"can still pick up a second hand game, and an online pass, and still be getting a good deal."

Yeah sure with the extra £10 atleast that you will charge for the service, some of the games will actually be costing more not long after release.

Going back to the previous news that apparently it helps maintain premium services, I just want to say what services? PS Plus? But you pay for that anyway (and it isnt even worth it). And how will making preowned players buy a pass but let orginal copys get it for free pay for services? It makes no f'ing diffrence to the amount they make.

It really annoys me when Sony, Microsoft and big game developers charge for online play when it is all that is in the game anyway (since dedicated single player games are the only ones with any satisfaction or duration). I mean they bitch about prewoned sales crippiling them but how much money do they make a year? Plus preowned sales have been around since PSX and only now its apparently costing them money? Thats just stupid.

Im just lucky that me and a friend often share games that one of us doesnt play anymore, and both have access to the others accounts so we can still play online on a diffrent ps3. Hows that for an up yours sony?

I heard they were passing a law to make it illegal to share accounts like that too though. Granted I think it was a state law and given the '£10' reference, I doubt this effects you. But give it time...

Yeah im in england so it wont. And I heard the intended crackdown was only going to be enforced if an account has plastation plus to stop people redownloading onto other playstations.

Besides they say about these laws but by the time they are actually enforced it will be too late like with illegal downloads of music and such. So many people will be doing it that it will be impossible to stop everyone. And then what about people with more than one ps3. I know its rare but some do.

Oh really!@!!!

Is that so....?

So whats next? Online is only the start?

Next....when U buy a disced based or even DDL based game you won't be able to play it at all (single-player as well as Online play) without registering a 1-kuntish time serial code for the whole package - uh!

Now that would really STOP the USED game market now wouldn't it!?

So... C'MON kuntz ...do it!!!!I dare ya!!

Are you high? That has to be the one of the dumbest things I have ever read - and believe me, I've read A LOT of dumb things. Credit comes with interest and will end up costing more, not less. Try attending those math classess next time. They work.

I don't like that this is the direction, but I can see why. It costs money to run the dedicated servers for these online games, and when you buy used you don't feed into those costs, so why should you be allowed to use something extra that the companies are providing to it's paying customers. It's a one time fee, and I feel it is fair.

Well that's why they only come to select first party games. I know EA has done this in the past, they also do some dedicated servers.

Wrong, the fee is paid by the original owner of the game. Remember that when you sell a game you are transferring ownership. So on the server side of the ecuation there's no change since one user is just replaced by another "-1+1=0".

This PSN pass is the final nail in the coffin for the playstation brand. I won't buy any game that makes me pay for something I already have...an online connection. Its not my problem if corporations are to cheap to run servers for their own games. I don't think its about that at all. They are just nickel and diming us. I'm done with PS3. They really killed it this year.

I think it's a bunch of crap. If I buy a game new, then I'm entitled to play it online as much as I like, yes? I mean that's the deal, that comes with the game that I bought, right--I could play it non-stop for the rest of my life (until the servers go down) and that's all included in the $60 I paid for it? I'm not paying for access to a game; I'm paying for the game. Once I've bought it, it's mine to do with as I please, including giving it/selling it (the original copy, not a pirated copy) to a friend. Sony and the devs are not being cheated in that situation: they've received their money for my copy of the game and it's not like my friend and I can both use it to go online at the same time, so the deal--unlimited online access with this copy of the game--should still be valid. They're not being cheated: they received $60 for a game that comes with unlimited online play and it doesn't cost them any more whether I keep it and play it forever or whether I give it to my friend and he plays it forever. So why should my friend have to pay extra for something I already paid for? It's a rip-off.

Just one more reason for me to refuse to do business with Sony.

You do get access to the game you paid for. If you paid 60 bucks for a game then the code should be in there. I don't understand why you're complaining. New game have voucher for online play. Used game don't.

This is kind of like pc games, most game use cd keys so used pc game become useless without the cd keys. Only if your in for the online play.

Just one more reason to use my 360 instead. First they get hacked and lose personal data, now they want more money from you to cover the costs of that mistake. PS3 for playing Blu-Rays, 360 for games at this point.

Dummy, you can't play Sony games on the 360. And the 3rd party multiplatform games with online pass systems use them on both platforms, which means they include the 360. And then the 360 charges their subscription ON TOP OF those online passes. Take a look at Mortal Kombat for example. You can't get away.

"At the end of the day, it's the direction the industry is heading in"

BULLSHIT. You are part of the leading industry: You have a large voice in where it is heading, and you are CHOOSING to lead us there. I am an avid Sony supporter, but this is exactly the kind of thing that alienates core supporters. Sony's screwed with us so many times at this point, and everyone has their limits. Removal of Other OS? Absolute failure in internet and user security? Now they're going to charge US extra because Gamestop has a stranglehold on the used game market? Why doesn't Sony work out a deal with them, instead of screwing the consumer?

Playing online isn't a huge loss so I don't know why they act like it is. The best solution to this problem is to wait a few months for the price of a new game to drop to like $30 or less. I can get 2 or sometimes 3 games for my $60. The developer gets half of what they asked originally so I save money, and I still get the benefits of a 'new' game.

Seriously, the last 14 games I bought were all under $30 and only 2 were used. Best part is they aren't old titles, many released this year. Although my backlog is enormous because of it...

PSN is becoming a paid service. Soon you will have to pay a fee for each game you want to play online.

I'm getting tired of Sony. I'll be building a new gaming PC soon and just ditch console online play completely.

I'm just getting tired of them nickle-and-dime'n me at every possible chance.

I don't think it will. PSN+ is a joke so far. M$ is the one doing all the nickle and diming.

Dang it and I was just thinking that CoD Elite was the only sinister milk-the-gamer scheme creeping in the game industry.

I can definitely expect all of the upcoming Sony exclusive games will be packing this crap.

I wouldn't worry about cross-platform games.
