It's been three days now, and still the PSN service remains out. After dilly-dallying with the explanation as to what exactly happened, Sony has now given a statement via the US arm of the PlayStation Blog. This, coupled with the rumors that the attack was directed to the Admin Dev accounts.
First, on the update. Senior Director for Corporate Communications and Social Media, Patrick Seybold, posted this statement:
"We sincerely regret that PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have been suspended, and we are working around the clock to bring them both back online. Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure. Though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security.
We thank you for your patience to date and ask for a little more while we move towards completion of this project. We will continue to give you updates as they become available."
But as to what really brought about this major inconvenience, they still have yet to explain. Regardless of their silence, though, rumors still come rolling in.
PSU reports that the damage really was an LOIC attack, which essentially was a denial-of-service, thereby damaging the server. This, according to their informant who supposedly has very close ties with SCEE.

Do you not read anything? Anon stopped attacking the PSN because it inconvinced users.... If they lied about the attack being from them that would go against what they told their users and no one would follow them...

I don't know man. You can only play some games right now or at least I can. I got portal 2 can't link it up with my steam cause of this, can't play mag, lbp2 gets boring without anyone on there, killzone 2 is ok for short periods of times, resistance 1 is freaking awesome, mvc3 is fun but gets tiresome after playing through it a couple of times, gt5 is fun but can get tiresome after awhile, and there is only so many times you can play through uncharted 2 before getting bored out of your mind.

How is this coincidental?
1. Anon attack sony via the PSN
2. users/Gamers say fuck you anon for taking down the PSN
3. Anon says they're sorry and won't do anything that will affect users/gamers anymore
4. PSN gets taken down and people start to blame it on anon
Anon isn't the only group of hackers out there you know? Why would anon who want people to follow them do something that would make Anyone who is following them decide to hate them instead? We'll probably find out who attacked sony soon enough anyway.

And kudos to Mabie for helping seed another new rumor to debate over. Why dig for information when we can just grasp on to water-cooler chit chat? :)
The PSN is and has always been broken. We should thank your lucky stars that someone has finally shown us exactly how broken it's been. If anything comes from this it'll hopefully be that Sony hires a real internetworking firm to do what they obviously can't.

ok ok it's been 3 days, and yet no psn, I just wish that all the stuff every players downloaded won't be lost... because if it's the case, I think sony will have to refund a lot if people...

1, play a different console.
2, play singleplayer.
3, GO OUTSIDE. You will see a bright light, thats called "The Sun". You will also feel a warmth and thats what the sun does, it warms things. And that smell is called "flowers" and they are the colored things you see when you look down.
