Rumor Alert: Bethesda Buying STALKER? |
Listed in: News Tags: Bethesda, dishonored, GSC Game World, rage, skyrim, stalker, stalker 2
Early this morning, news emerged from a Ukrainian blog site that Bethesda, publisher of big-name titles like Skyrim, RAGE and Dishonored, has picked up the rights to GSC Game World’s STALKER franchise. Industry observers will remember that STALKER 2 has been all but canceled thanks to financial issues over at GSC, so it sort of makes sense they’d be looking for a buy.

The basic gist is that while former GSC CEO Sergei Grigovich will retain the rights to the STALKER universe (books, films), Bethesda will be able to make games that bear the STALKER title. Additionally, the rumor indicates that the next STALKER game will be developed entirely by Bethesda or Obsidian.
Now, there are a couple of things worth noting here: Number one, this is merely an unsubstantiated rumor from blogger Sergey Golyonkin. Number two, Golyonkin was the very same guy that broke the story about GSC’s closure and the cancellation of STALKER 2. So, it could go either way.
Bethesda’s response so far? “No comment.”
What do you think? Would STALKER be a good buy for Bethesda?
