Resistance 3 to implement Sony's online pass?

We've seen the official boxart for Resistance 3, but we didn't really see anything pertaining to a PSN Pass. Yet, an unverified shot of the said boxart for the 320GB bundle surfaced on the Internet.

Upon first glance, it appears that this PSN Pass is something akin to EA's controversial Online Pass System. Basically, what this pass does is to make sure that only first-time buyers of the game will be granted access to the online multiplayer feature via a Redemption Code. Supposedly, this is to encourage people to buy their games first-hand. If it can't be helped, however, and you do end up with a second-hand copy, but would still want to get in on the online action, you'd have to buy the pass separately, but at a much higher cost.

This isn't confirmed yet by either Insomniac Games or Sony, though, so we're going to have to tag this as rumor. Other Sony titles which have previously implemented the said system would be SOCOM: US Navy Seals Fireteam Bravo 3 (PSP) and ModNation Racers.

Insomniac is promising a much better iteration for the franchise with Resistance 3, hyping up among many other features their new and "improved" AI system. The game won't be out till September, but you can start getting to know the new Chimeran enemies you'll be facing, courtesy of this latest dev diary.

would it turn you off if they do implement this psn pass for resistance 3, or it doesn't matter?

I don't know if it would put me off buying it, but it is getting very annoying now. Some games are charging £7.99 for online passes now, whereas it was £6.29 for most at the start.

I just hate that the publishers are doing it to get more money. You can't tell me they don't have enough already. And they're killing the pre-owned market by doing this. Half the GameStation shops in the UK are gone because of this. Game saw the pre-owned sales going down so decided to close a lot of their GameStation branches as a result.

The point of these passes is to get rid of the pre-owned market... :-*

You need to remember that 0% of all preowned sales go to the publishers and developers of a game.

I can completely understand why any publisher would want to do this.

But at £40 a copy brand new you can't seriously tell me they don't already make enough? It's like the MPAA saying piracy is destroying the movie industry. Transformers 3 ALONE has already broke $400 million and it only cost an estimated $195 million.

It's another case of greed on the publisher's behalf.

Think of it this way, you buy a game you like, complete it and take it in to somewhere like Game. Your plan is to get some money back so you can buy the 2nd game i nthe franchise. Only to find out your pre-owned copy is almost worth nothing because of the online pass codes. You then can't afford to buy the 2nd game in the franchise so the publisher actually loses out in the long run here.

Also, what if you choose to give the game to a family member? They have to pay to go online, despite the fact the game is still in the same house! Seriously, it's a cheap ass way of coining in on pre-owned sales.

Why didn't they just try and strike up a deal with game retailers? Instead they just rip us off directly...

And if their aim is to destroy the pre-owned games market, then they're also going to make more people un-employed at the same time. How anyone can defend that is beyond me.

Well if the get rid of the used market I see sales dropping quickly. I can buy 3 used games at 20 bucks forthe price of 1. And if it wasn't for that price I probably wouldn't have bought them because they got less than 7.5 from game informer. I know a lot of people either buy used and return it in the 7 days for a full refund gamestop allows to buy it new (who wants to spend 55 bucks and then another 10 for an online pass when you can take it back and buy it new) or rent a game before buying it new to prevent wasting money. This will only hurt the game companies.

Uh.... you cant return a new game after it's been opened. If you return a new game and the seal is broken you can only exhange it for the same title. This is policy agreed on by all retailers that sell video games.

However Gamestop will allow you to return used games for any reason.

Who cares. If it's not worth buying used for $30 then you just need to wait a few more months until the 'new' price drops that low. Companies aren't going to squeeze any extra money from me because I play too much to pay full price. Ever. Launch prices rarely last long anyway.

Having a large backlog means I'll never be bored while waiting for a price drop. It also allows me to ignore online modes if they require a pass. Like I would ever be caught paying extra to play a game online.

To be honest this system is already failing as you can get 90% of all these passes on ebay for like 2-3$ go figure. Im all for this system tho as some may hate it for killing off the resale market but that particular market hurts the game industry more than even piracy. So i would rather a online pass system than a Not For Resale title.

The only problem with ebay is that you have to hope that the person you bought it from hasn't actually sold their code off previously.

this is like Socom FTB3 for psp, you need some shitty code to type in to be able to play online, and if you get it second hand or you pirate hte iso off www.pspiso.com, then it wont fucking work for shit.

As long as it is activated for the system and not just a user because that is annoying. I can totally understand why they do this, because when someone buys a used game the developers don't make money off of it, these games cost tens of thousands of dollars to make so paying $10 or $15 to get the full benefit of that game is totally reasonable, buying used is like downloading pirated except more people are willing to do it because it's legal.

If the games industry was rock bottom and publishers/developers weren't making money I could fully understand them doing the online pass.

But they make an absolute s**t ton of money out of us. Everyone is just getting too greedy and it's driving me insane.

If they aren't making enough money then how do they manage to afford to make sequels? And what about all the things like PS1 re-releases and all the OLD sega re-releases? And various other games that are re-released as they are, with no HD upscale or anything. Things like that are pure profit so why do we need to pay more to the greedy bast***s on a 2nd hand copy of a game?!

So thats why many great devs are closing up shop because there games apparently didnt even break even in sales vs development costs? Thats a pretty absurd statement, then again industry outsiders dont really get the climate inside. Not all devs are hurting just the ones trying to innovate and make something new besides CoD 10000. Anyone remember Pandemic or more recently Game Republic? Yea.... they made tons of money...

The reason devs get shut down is because the games they make are crap and people don't buy them. It has NOTHING at all to do with the pre-owned market. I mean let's face it, the Dragon Ball games weren't anything special were they? And the only fairly good game Pandemic made was Mercenaries.

It's not the pre-owned market destroying developers. If they don't make enough money from normal sales then pre-owned sales or not, the company is going down.
