Resident Evil Producer Says It Would Be "Very Difficult" to Return to Roots |

Resident Evil: Revolutions producer Masachika Kawata was recently asked about Resident Evil 6 and how it strayed from its roots. Needless to say, he said something most fans would disagree with.
"I think it's very difficult to literally go back to our roots on that and take gameplay mechanics and styles that we did fifteen years ago and apply them now," Kawata said. "Revelations' goal was to go back to the series's roots in terms of content and horror, while at the same time trying to modernize the gameplay, because that's what we think gamers want."
When pressed further, he said, "For myself I see is as something that would be very difficult to pull off."
But where did Resident Evil 6 go wrong, given that the fan feedback has been largely negative? This was not a problem with Resident Evil: Revelations. Kawata seems to think RE6 may have spread itself too thin.
"I think one main difference between the two games is Revelations has this focus on one aspect of Resident Evil, which is survival horror," said Kawata.
"Resident Evil 6's aim was to be appealing to a wide variety of people. It's really something that had a 'dramatic horror' or 'horror entertainment' concept at its core that was appealing to a wider audience, and that's something that majorly factored into the difference in reception."
