The last iteration, Afterlife, came out in 2010, and had Milla's character, Alice, heading off to Tokyo to come face to face with Alex Wesker. We're not quite sure where this fifth title will be leading to as the details were pretty scarce coming from the publishers, although it is obvious that they will be jumping off from where Afterlife ended. They did announce, however, that the film will be coming out on September 14, 2012.
Also reported to make this fifth movie installment even more exciting is that it will be given support for stereoscopic 3D presentations. Afterlife also was shown in 3D, and this is believed to have raked in the profits for the film, reaching up to US$ 236 million abroad. Locally, it garnered US$ 60.1 million in revenues, making it the second-highest grossing zombie-themed flick, next to Zombieland. Despite these numbers, however, it still remained that Afterlife actually got the lowest attendance out of the whole franchise.
We've got no word of Milla Jovovich or anybody else from the previous installments will be reprising their roles. It's safe to surmise though that they are still in the pre-production phase, given that the release date is still a long ways off. If all goes well according to schedule, this will be the shortest time a film installment had to wait before following the last one for the franchise. The rest of the Resident Evil films were three years apart from each other on average.

Zombie films are good. I do kinda hate how the story took it though, they went the same way with a silly retarded Wesker. Whatsherteeth who's playing Jill doesn't fit the role right. Alice isnt really needed.
I still think Capcom should redo the series themselves. Call it Biohazard to not confuse the two? Julia Voth should be Valentine! I do like the animated movie series though.
