RAGE on PS3 8GB Install, 22GB optional for 360

For those of you with your new fancy cheap PS3 consoles, better save a little space on that hard drive so you can install the new sci-fi shooter. The PS3 version of the game will have a mandatory 8GB installation, whilst the 360 installation will be 22GB, but optional, as most games are installable

The installation size on PC is currently unknown but I'm sure it ranges around the same size as the PS3 installation. Whether or not the optimisation for any of the versions will be better via installation remains to be seen, but I've heard from friends and seen a few videos online that show the 360's installed versions run a lot smoother and it's always good to have a 'backup' just in case. 22 gigs for the 360 version isn't exactly uncommon but these coming months are hotting up so you might want to save it for something you're gonna play through the winter (in the US) or summer (here)

Most likely as John says. Many pc games don't even use the disc after installation anymore, so it's likely to see the using aprox. the same as ps3/xbox 360 (here I'm thinking ps3 handles it with lower hdd, due to the larger space on the disc, thus not need to decompress a major amount of software)..

But we'll see..

The Xbox360 version of the game most probably uses three discs, and the 22GB install from the Xbox360 is probably just installing three discs to the harddrive.

As you may or may not know with multiple discs, a lot of the data on those discs is the same, stuff such as the main engine, main sprite/skin data, it is all the same, just specific events hold up other data.

Although, maybe 12Gb for the pc would be a more realistic number I think.

It wouldn't be. Whoever speculated that is wrong. A better way of putting it would be:

22GB install for DVD drives.
8GB install for Bluray drives.

Seeing as how the PC version will most likely be DVD.....there ya go.

Clearly you don't understand.

Assuming 100% of the game fits on a single BD disc and that disc has an 8GB required install then they have set aside 8GB of data that requires fast read speed. The rest of the data can stay on the disc.

Now lets look at the DVDs. Assuming there are 3 dual layer DVDs they will require the SAME 8GB to be on the HDD however, in order to keep people from swapping out discs they are also loading the rest of the game onto the HDD from two of those discs. That way the rest of the data can stay on the single left over DVD. OR as the article mentions the rest of the data is optional and the user can simply swap discs.

Now put on your thinking cap this one is going to take some work. Who in their right mind would create a BD PC game? Hopefully you can figure that one out on your own because I'm not going to explain it for you. So like I said earlier, assuming the PC version comes on DVD then.....read above for which path they are going to take.

So there you have it, ONCE AGAIN there is no need to assume the DVD PC installation would be similar to the BD PS3 installation. It makes more sense to assume the DVD PC installation will mirror the DVD 360 install.

Get it now? Here's a simpler version:

DVD != BD
DVD = DVD

My point is that pc games dont run off a disc, bluray or not. they get installed to the hdd. so 22 for the 360 and 8 or even 12 for the pc is nonsensical. I cant believe they fill a hdd install on the 360 with dummy files, they do it on discs, yeah but..

DVD = DVD

Assuming of course this news isn't complete bunk.

The PS3 game is going to be the same size, but if they made you to install 22Gigs it would take for ever plus it is a lot of space.
So you just install 8Gigs that are probably the most frequently needed files to be loaded and the rest will be loaded from the disc.
