No matter how many ways you slice it, when it comes to gaming on any hardware, the stuff you're going to be playing is probably the most important aspect of all. Let's first take a look at PC. In general you definitely have a bevy of pretty solid options to choose from. Shooters like Counter-Strike in particular are better on this option because mouse and keyboard add greater accuracy to the mechanics. Not to mention PC is pretty much the only place where MMOs and RTS have really been able to take off. Still, other than those few genres performing well, when it comes to action titles and exclusives the PC falls back horribly. In cases like the upcoming Dark Souls, even developers have chosen to ignore computers in favor of consoles. I wouldn't say that this is a trend but its certainly not uncommon.

On the other hand, you've got consoles which are for the most part the original platform where many of the PC titles you're playing now come from. You may not be able to play MMOs here, but when you're talking about shooters there are more of them with more people online then you could ever possibly need. Sure there are going to be many people here that say the ones on PC are more hardcore, and you may be right. Still, for most titles it's clear that more people would rather use a console. The industry knows this, which is why so many key titles are being developed for Xbox and PS3. Also, when was the last time you could really tell me of any exclusive PC game that was a must to make me upgrade my graphics card? Other than maybe Guild Wars 2, I'm not sure there are any. Consoles have Master Chief, Kratos, and Mario which have all become icons. Who exactly is the face of PC gaming?
All that being said, all machines are going to have their games with strong communities, but if you're looking for an overall winner in terms of the amount of titles you'll have at your disposal with larger public acceptance, consoles win easily.
Winner: Consoles

But yea, PC gaming is as good as the money you're willing to throw down (but not on prebuilts from Worst Buy or something like that, cuz they're overpriced and come with shit for video cards and PSUs.
Hell, get an HD 7750-7770 or GTX 650 for less than $100 bucks and put it inside your existing PC. There you go, gaming PC.

Same can be said with hooking up console to PC monitor at a desk.
Point is, PC isn't limited to desk only.

If you don't want to do all that (like me) you're better off just sticking to a console considering most PC games are just ports from a PS3 or 360.

Whenever I get tired of fps games, I switch to skyward sword on the dolphin emulator.
Whats cool is that I can draw the game with my PC at 4x the native resolution.
