Sony has finally unveiled the technology behind the upcoming PSP Remaster series, which allows developer to bring some good ole' PSP titles straight to the PS3.

Announced at Sony’s Game Tools & Middleware Forum 2011 event in Tokyo yesterday, the middleware technology behind the PS3 HD remakes will be simply known as the PSP Engine. The new engine will basically act as a middleware between the PS3s OS and a PSP game, while offering a slew of new and improvements, such as:

  • High res rendering
  • Control (with Dual Analogue support) through wireless controllers (Dualshock 3/Sixaxis)
  • 3D stereoscopic output
  • Ad-hoc Party unification
  • Main memory and graphic memory expansion
  • Common save data

The PSP Engine will be used in the upcoming ports of Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker and Monster Hunter 3rd HD. Sony confirmed last May that the PSP Remaster games won't features trophies.

the psp engine is in fact a emulation engine .
instead of emulating the whole code it is a integration that reverse engine the source of the game and partialy convert the code to the ps3.
some curent emulator does similar things like dolphin who can output stereoscopic 3d with gamecube and wii games.
or some n64 plugs that add pixel shaders and hdr bloom to old n64 games.
it guess it is a nice idea but im disapointed cause it is another reason to milk us.

The newer models don't have PS2 backwards compatibility because you can't emulate the proprietary PS2 chips on a PS3, and the older models game with those chips built-in. If you wanted backwards compatibility, you should've bought a PS3 when it had it (and was therefor more expensive). Just buy a PS2, they're less than $100 and have the best library.

thats a load of crap. My 80gig PS3 doesnt have any special chips, its all emulation based and I've never had one issue playing my old PS2 games ....

isnt the emotion engine chip required for playing ps2 games on ps3? .

Dude, the 80gb has the ps2's Graphic chip but emulates the CPU, hence some games are unstable.

check wikipedia before you start spouting shit.

well, if i can bring up the recent ps3 hacks. there is a new version of the Cobra dongle (flash drive) that unlocks the ps2 emulator embed in every ps3. problem is that with the removed chips ps2 games run buggy and slow. but given this info and the realization that they can create a psp engine, they simply do not want to improve the internal emulator due to profit seeking. they release old games in the marginally enhanced HD version just to elicit a BS incentive out of you to buy ps2 games you already own laying around your house. :sigh: check out psx-scene.com for yourselves

last ps3 backwards compatible was using fully software emulation with a gamekey list and profiles.
(the eu models)
a bit like the 360.
only jp ones had hardware emulation.
but some games had glitches and it wasnt working with demo disc.
so they prefered gave up.
some dongles are using those software to make slim ps3 compatible .
but it is still verry buggy.

# again you are wrong...Mr2Ange 2011-07-04 05:33
The original ps3s (japanese) had both CPU and GPU in the hardware,

The EU-60gb and US-80gb both have the GPU in hardware and the ps3 software emulates the CPU.

There is NO PS3 that supports ps2 games in software alone.

actually the backwards compatible models had the emotion engine and the ps2 graphics chip (the graphics synthesizer), the emulation bc based ps3 have no emotion engine but still had the GS chip. the ones that dont have GS chip have no ps2 backwards compatibility at all

Yeah it would be nice if they gave us emulation for both. They would sell more games that way.

Monster Hunter probably wouldn't be pushing the PS3 to the limit anyway. It would be nice to have an actual new game for PS3 though. I guess the PSVita version'll have to do.

I would like to see Birth by Sleep Final Mix (giving that one an international release of course), Duodecim, CC:FF7, FFType-0 once it's out and probably some more I just can't think of right now.

This probably makes me look like a huge Square fanboy but I'm actually not. Those are just some of those games I really would like to play (again) on the big screen.
Peace Walker and Monster Hunter really were the only other 2 games I wanted to see get a PS3 port but we're getting those already so.. yeah..

not to diss the whole remaster program but wont this hit the psp sales.

i mean why would somebody buy the psp version of a game that later on will have a HD remastered version and all the other features the psp can't support on the PS3
