PSN still down, Sony admits it might have been an attack |
Listed in: News Tags: SCEE, Sony

It's been more than a day, and things are far from being fine and dandy. For their part, Sony has finally admitted that the outage may have been due to an external attack. So far, Anonymous has not boasted of any recent attack on Sony, but we're still waiting for develoments on that.
Some services have already been brought back up, though, but for the most part, the PlayStation Network still isn't accessible from either the PS3 or the PSP. SCEE is particularly scrambling to do something about it because it's a Bank Holiday in the UK, and so flocks of gamers are expected to settle themselves on their couches to spend a leisurely day of lethargy playing video games on their consoles.
We'll be keeping you posted on the situation. If you hear anything, do feel free to share.

If it were them, they would be taking credit. They're fighting a "war" remember? They won't risk losing credit for an attack. I'm surprising they didn't take credit for it even if it wasn't their fault.
Though, this isn't to say that it wasn't an attack, it just wasn't one by them.

Some other IRC chatrooms are also convinced that kiddy porn is perfectly normal.

Amen to that :>

I'm saying their statement of not being responsible for psn outages is vaild due to them always wanting to take credit for everything bad that happens to sony.
I'm sure if Annons really COULD shut down PSN for good (to further their goals), they WOULD.
Anons have no reason not to take credit for it if they are responsible.

why couldn't Sony just be more civil like M$ and not sue every person who is hacking and developing homebrew for the PS3?
Now us the legit PS3 consumers have to pay for Sony's mistakes and suffer the wrath from anti-Sony hacker groups.
Nice going Sony! It feels really nice getting screwed on easter weekend.

Hell, I'm surprised they didn't claim the deed anyways, probably want to embarrass Sony by saying "nope, not our fault, they can't even keep their own network up".

Anyone that's a PS+ member is paying for a service that's not accessible thanks to these jokers. The service costs .13 cents per day for annual membership. Sounds small I know, but multiply that number first by the days the service will be down, and then by all the PS+ users. And that'll be enough to hopefully bankrupt.
I don't know the numbers for PS+ membership, but lets say the service is down for 3 days and there are 1 million subscribers (a nice round number). We could tag Anonymous for $410,958.90 of damages.

First of all, if it was them, this would have blown their chances of getting their "demands" as all it would do is push customers towards Sony not the other way around.
Second of all, wouldn't they have fronted up by now..
And lastly PS users have no PSN is leaning towards the opposite of what Anon stands for.
And yes I do support them but in a situation like this I am certainly not giving a one sided view.
I think we all just need to chill and let it all play out. No one involved, Sony or Customers (even Anon) are in a good situation due to this mess.

Theoretically, the hacker that shut down the service might have also copied PSN purchase records which might also contain credit card information. Obviously not sure if that's true or not.

So, they take down psn and say 'sony's just incompetent lulz' and 'we didn't do it, don't hate us' so people will blame sony for having a 'shitty' online service. Meanwhile, people start to think 'wow, anon's not messing with sony anymore so they must really care about us!' and people stop posting 'anon is gay, eat a dick anon, etc.' and start flaming sony.
Basic tactic to reverse anon's PR damage. The whole point is to get people thinking 'maybe it wasn't anon and the sony service just sucks therefore sony sucks... hmmm...'
Now for argument's sake, if it wasn't an attack by anon then what group do you guys suspect?

why are the mad at sony? for some of the same reasons i am... let me explain. i purchased my 80gb chrome ps3 within a week of its release, i bought it in part because it had other OS "ability to install linux" and backwards compatibility with PS2 games. of course parts of my purchased equipment was taken away from me post purchase! did i get a partial refund? NO.. i the sale of a product a contract? YES.. did i end up with what was advertised to me? NO.. not to mention i own my ps3 in full, not sony, i do not rent it from them, therefor if i wanted to i can take it apart, add more internal usb slots, glue it back together, use it as a small room heater or a large blowdrier, it's my choice because it is mine, i own it, not sony..
on the other hand I DO NOT want the ps3 to get hacked!! i stopped playing my online psp games when everyone was able to cheet, making the games useless and I DO NOT support piracy! so i guess i agree with both sides and disagree with both sides.
so in many ways i agree with what they want from sony, but i don't necessarily agree with there methods.
as a final note, i love my PS3 but sony doesn't respect it customers in my opinion!

How come none of you accuse Sony of having a crappy infrastructure? Remember when Anon tried to take down Amazon for no longer hosting the PS3 jailbreak sites? Amazon didn't feel a thing. Anon launches one little cyber-attack against the PSN and takes it down for nearly a week. Sony had plenty of time to redesign and lock down the PSN infrastructure after that attack, and yet they didn't. Now the entire shebang (free, paid, and store) have been down for 3+ days, yet no one accuses Sony. Anonymous is not your enemy here, nor is Microsoft, Nintendo, or their users. SONY is to blame here, and just as always, they'd rather blame someone else and claim they're the victim. With any luck, the longer this goes on, the better you guys will see though Sony's B.S. Press Releases. Sure, they'll give out a free month to PSN+ users, and may even turn everyone's PSN account into + for a month or so (like a Xbox Live Free Weekend), but at the end of the day, the infrastructure is obviously broken. I'm certainly glad I don't pay for it.
