PSN still down, Sony admits it might have been an attack

Nope, that definitely wasn't a simple maintenance activity. Yesterday, the PSN shut down worldwide, much to the surprise of the users. A couple of hours later, Sony "owned up" to it, reassuring subscribers that they were simply doing maintenance checks on the service, and that things should be back up soon enough.

psnetwork

It's been more than a day, and things are far from being fine and dandy. For their part, Sony has finally admitted that the outage may have been due to an external attack. So far, Anonymous has not boasted of any recent attack on Sony, but we're still waiting for develoments on that.

Some services have already been brought back up, though, but for the most part, the PlayStation Network still isn't accessible from either the PS3 or the PSP. SCEE is particularly scrambling to do something about it because it's a Bank Holiday in the UK, and so flocks of gamers are expected to settle themselves on their couches to spend a leisurely day of lethargy playing video games on their consoles.

We'll be keeping you posted on the situation. If you hear anything, do feel free to share.

Anonymous aren't responsible for this one.

They confirmed via a irc chatroom that they are not responsible for the attack.

If it were them, they would be taking credit. They're fighting a "war" remember? They won't risk losing credit for an attack. I'm surprising they didn't take credit for it even if it wasn't their fault.

Though, this isn't to say that it wasn't an attack, it just wasn't one by them.

You obviously didn't read my post. I'm not saying there claims of not being responsible for PSN outages are valid due to it being stated on IRC chatroom.

I'm saying their statement of not being responsible for psn outages is vaild due to them always wanting to take credit for everything bad that happens to sony.

I'm sure if Annons really COULD shut down PSN for good (to further their goals), they WOULD.

Anons have no reason not to take credit for it if they are responsible.

at the end of the day this is cyber terrorism. Sony mentioned that the are getting the FBI involved...at the end of the day these are hackers who are being ridiculous. I think the mention of authorities brings an air of seriousness. That may make them rethink twice about taking credit.

Sony is the top of the black hat hacker's most hated list. Sony pretty much painted a red bull's eye on its ass intentionally.

why couldn't Sony just be more civil like M$ and not sue every person who is hacking and developing homebrew for the PS3?

Now us the legit PS3 consumers have to pay for Sony's mistakes and suffer the wrath from anti-Sony hacker groups.

Nice going Sony! It feels really nice getting screwed on easter weekend. :-?

Do you guys realise, because of your attack (not saying you doing this one, implying on your first attack with seems to have taken up followers who finish it) and Sony now strengthening the PSN and its security, its very likely that NOT A SINGLE CFW will be able to ACCESS PSN for probably MONTHS / YEARS. Really? You really think Anon would even f***ing care what other people think of them? they're trolls, if they did do it, they'd have come out showing off to the world.

Hell, I'm surprised they didn't claim the deed anyways, probably want to embarrass Sony by saying "nope, not our fault, they can't even keep their own network up".

They get one up on the hacker who started all of this, and now regular PS3 and PSP users have to suffer as this selfish and narrow minded group act out their DDOS tantrum!

Actually I wouldn't be surprised if we the people could start a class-action lawsuit against Anonymous for the disruption in a multitude of Sony services.

Anyone that's a PS+ member is paying for a service that's not accessible thanks to these jokers. The service costs .13 cents per day for annual membership. Sounds small I know, but multiply that number first by the days the service will be down, and then by all the PS+ users. And that'll be enough to hopefully bankrupt.

I don't know the numbers for PS+ membership, but lets say the service is down for 3 days and there are 1 million subscribers (a nice round number). We could tag Anonymous for $410,958.90 of damages.

As much as an easy target Anon has been made, mainly through their own actions, the likely hood that they are behind this is doubtful.
First of all, if it was them, this would have blown their chances of getting their "demands" as all it would do is push customers towards Sony not the other way around.
Second of all, wouldn't they have fronted up by now..
And lastly PS users have no PSN is leaning towards the opposite of what Anon stands for.
And yes I do support them but in a situation like this I am certainly not giving a one sided view.
I think we all just need to chill and let it all play out. No one involved, Sony or Customers (even Anon) are in a good situation due to this mess.

I bet this is actually Sony trying to stop CFW users from connecting to PSN with some update, and they are using Anonymous as a, I believe it was called, scapegoat. 2 birds, 1 stone I guess... who knows, seeing how long this is taking they could be implementing a system that automatically updates users to OFW.

I believe violence is not an answer to this situation with Sony, so I don't agree with Anonymous' actions. However, your comment is immature, and you should take this news with a grain of salt, before you start choosing sides. Also, just because PSN was and is down, does that mean you should injure someone and risk your time over something as ridiculous as this?

I know Anon is saying they aren't behind this but think about it...if the anon network is so large how can they control every single member? What if it's s splinter group who want to be jerks? Or even simpler, what if it WAS anon and they're simply lying and just want to make sony look bad by having the network down for so long? It'd be easier to say "it wasn't us" and have sony look foolish for not having any explanations.

If Sony isn't the cause of this, why would they claim it to be maintenance rather than telling the truth to it's customers first? It would seem as of late that Sony has a lot to hide from it's PSN users, and that they are trying to use Anonymous to cover it up. Who knows what if this really isn't Anonymous but rather Sony employees? Then, again you could be right, and Anonymous is just trying to make Sony look bad, or a rogue group is going vigilante style. Either way, whoever is to blame, the PSN users are suffering from this. I guess only time might tell the cause of the servers being down. (Sorry for the long comment hope no one fell asleep) :zzz

They claimed such, because who wants to admit that their service has been compromised by hackers.

Theoretically, the hacker that shut down the service might have also copied PSN purchase records which might also contain credit card information. Obviously not sure if that's true or not.

Anon's goal is to make sony look like shit. Their other goal is to get people to stop thinking that THEY are shit.

So, they take down psn and say 'sony's just incompetent lulz' and 'we didn't do it, don't hate us' so people will blame sony for having a 'shitty' online service. Meanwhile, people start to think 'wow, anon's not messing with sony anymore so they must really care about us!' and people stop posting 'anon is gay, eat a dick anon, etc.' and start flaming sony.

Basic tactic to reverse anon's PR damage. The whole point is to get people thinking 'maybe it wasn't anon and the sony service just sucks therefore sony sucks... hmmm...'

Now for argument's sake, if it wasn't an attack by anon then what group do you guys suspect?

here is an archive of anon's activities and videos they have released http://www.anonops.tk/ i suggest you all read, watch and concider what they want, and stand for before deciding weather you believe they are bad or good, at fault or not at fault. this would also give you some idea of what they are capable of doing if they choose, this thing with sony is just one of many battles they are fighting around the world, and it would seem that the often win there battles. learn more about them, then decide.
why are the mad at sony? for some of the same reasons i am... let me explain. i purchased my 80gb chrome ps3 within a week of its release, i bought it in part because it had other OS "ability to install linux" and backwards compatibility with PS2 games. of course parts of my purchased equipment was taken away from me post purchase! did i get a partial refund? NO.. i the sale of a product a contract? YES.. did i end up with what was advertised to me? NO.. not to mention i own my ps3 in full, not sony, i do not rent it from them, therefor if i wanted to i can take it apart, add more internal usb slots, glue it back together, use it as a small room heater or a large blowdrier, it's my choice because it is mine, i own it, not sony..
on the other hand I DO NOT want the ps3 to get hacked!! i stopped playing my online psp games when everyone was able to cheet, making the games useless and I DO NOT support piracy! so i guess i agree with both sides and disagree with both sides.
so in many ways i agree with what they want from sony, but i don't necessarily agree with there methods.
as a final note, i love my PS3 but sony doesn't respect it customers in my opinion!

I dont know why people do this...I remember old times, when I was playing Psycho Fox on my Master System with my friends via Sega Network (aka SEGANET), and people keep trying to put it down...
I remember a group of hackers claiming they put it down for one WHOLE week...Jesus man, we couldnt even log in to see our trophies..and worst, after it comes alive again...SURPRISE...I lost ALL, I said ALL my trophies including Golden Axe ones...and shit, even my Street of Rage ones (AND YOU KNOW HOW DIFICULT IT WAS TO GET THE GOLDEN TROPHY WITH ADAM!!) I got so mad...thumbs down for hackers for GODSAKE!

I love how people are calling these peoples hackers, Ddos didn't work for long and thats not thier goal.Personally sounds like someone was inside sony and pulled a valid piece of the equipment and dipped causing the network to fail without said component and now sony needs to ship for a new one.

Still waiting on the Sony Press Release stating that they've taken the PSN away due to "security reasons".

Anon may not claim it's them, but it's them. What better way to attack sony without looking like the douche bag than to do it and claim it wasn't you.

Anonymous aren't terrorists. They stand up for free speech and freedom of information. It's like saying Greenpeace are terrorists that do no good.

Point is; they won't deny what they do. Even those Al Quaeda scumbags admit things. Anon say they didn't do it, they didn't do it.

"it was them", "no, it was THEM", "no way, dude, it was *THEM*!"

How come none of you accuse Sony of having a crappy infrastructure? Remember when Anon tried to take down Amazon for no longer hosting the PS3 jailbreak sites? Amazon didn't feel a thing. Anon launches one little cyber-attack against the PSN and takes it down for nearly a week. Sony had plenty of time to redesign and lock down the PSN infrastructure after that attack, and yet they didn't. Now the entire shebang (free, paid, and store) have been down for 3+ days, yet no one accuses Sony. Anonymous is not your enemy here, nor is Microsoft, Nintendo, or their users. SONY is to blame here, and just as always, they'd rather blame someone else and claim they're the victim. With any luck, the longer this goes on, the better you guys will see though Sony's B.S. Press Releases. Sure, they'll give out a free month to PSN+ users, and may even turn everyone's PSN account into + for a month or so (like a Xbox Live Free Weekend), but at the end of the day, the infrastructure is obviously broken. I'm certainly glad I don't pay for it.

These stupid Anonymous bullshits need to get arrested and get lethal injections. They have the fucking right to break laws and hack systems at their own leisure? Fucking bullshit laws don't punish these CRIMINAL HACKERS the way they should be. I guarantee if they were committing online fraud or were downloading illegal porn the cops would catch them within hours, but any other laws are OK to be broken? FUCKING BULLSHIT. ALL CYBER CRIMINALS NEED THE SAME FUCKING PUNISHMENT, LIFE BEHIND FUCKING BARS YOU PIECE OF SHIT CROOKS. FUCK YOU ASSHOLE COPS THAT WASTE FUCKING TAX PAYERS MONEY ON DONUTS AND DONT DO BULLSHIT AGINST THESE FUCKING CRIMINALS THAT HACK PEOPLE AND THINK THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH IT BY CALLING THEMSELVES ANONYMOUS.
