PSN Restoration phase begins now

The much awaited restoration phase of the PlayStation Network has officially commenced. After weeks of trepidation and anxious waiting, Patrick Seybold, Sr. Director for Corporate Communications & Social Media, has now announced that you can now update your PS3's firmware to change your password.



Earlier, President Kazuo Hirai made the announcement of the restoration of some services, region by region, with the online multiplayer functionality addressed first.

Said Seybold's note on the PlayStation Blog:



"Please note that these services will take a bit of time to be turned on and rolled out to the whole country. The process has begun and some states are being turned on now, so please be patient a we reach your city and state. We'll be updating the map below as service comes online in individual states. It will take several hours to restore PSN throughout the entire country, so please keep checking back for the latest updates. In the meantime, now's a great time to get your PS3's firmware updated, which is required to get online."

I'm away from my PS3 right now but I was able to change the password via the PlayStation site. So if you have internet access but are not able to get to your PS3 right now you can do this as well.

Got to love how things work. I got my PS3 updated, went to play online and 5 minutes later I got a YLD. Now I have a broken PS3 with a game that won't come out of the drive bay... Nothing better to start the day.
