PSN game sharing is now restricted further |
Listed in: News Tags: psn game sharing, psn maintenance, psn updates, Sony
Yesterday’s PS3 maintenance included a change to the PSN game sharing policy, and not in a good way. New purchases of titles through the PSN are now restricted to two systems – including PS3 and PSP. This means that you can download the game to your PS3 and your PSP, or to two PSPs or two PS3s.

The change does not apply to games you’ve already purchased, which will still be allowed on up to five systems at a time. Presumably this policy was keeping Sony up at night with visions of games sales slipping through their fingers. So instead of allowing people to share their games with their friends, they are limiting the sharing possibilities.
I’m of two minds on this policy change. On one hand, as a member of the game industry I feel that they have the right to make sure that everyone who is playing a game paid for it. That’s where DRM came from – and other systems like Steam keep you from sharing games between accounts even with people in the same household. On the other hand though, as a gamer, I chafe at any opportunity large companies take to rake more cash from the masses. So I put the question to you, the gaming elite: Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Which copies? Can you store and sell them later?

But you know where you stand with Steam because its not just another thing they decide to change four years later ..unlike Sony and the ps3

So you are saying people turn to piracy because their previous method of getting free games stopped working?... That is sad.

They give you the option to activate certain devices and deactivate certain devices so I don't see a problem here... Just deactivate the console you aren't using. And if you have 3 or 5 consoles in your household, you can pretty much afford to buy that one extra game again.
Just be smart about the games you buy and on what accounts you buy them. Make like 2 or three accounts and divide your games across them.
You have kids that like to play kiddie games ? Make an account that only buys kiddie games and make a separate account for the more grown up games you play and your child aren't allowed to play anyway. (Or rather, advised not to play)

Sony always tries to make it out as your fault if it ylod. I asked them to give me back my activation slots not long ago and they said "as a gesture of good will, we're going to give you an additional 2 slots" and some bull about "highly unlikley the console will breakdown more than twice in a lifetime" yeahhh right.. cause it wasnt put together with lego. /endsarcasm lets just hope it doesnt break again then.

Granted, it only lists the choice to deactivate *all* not a single device, but that's better than not getting your shit back. You obviously don't know how to take care of your PS3 if it's happened to you at least 5 times.
