When it comes to the real advanced sector of the PS3 scene, the name Nathan_r32_69 is one of the first to come to mind. With his array of tools created to work with .pkg and .spkg files, he has in part allowed users of Sony's flagship console to get the most out of their hacked experience. To add to the development pallet we now have a new program called PUP's Syscon Changer that has the potential to add quite a bit to our community.
For those that may not be so technologically inclined, the PUP extension is used to refer to any specific update .pkg for the PS3. Essentially you can think of it much like how an update EBOOT works for the older Sony PSPs. All of the update files are housed in this archive and extracted onto the system itself. The syscon file in particular is part of the PUP, and it is the file that more or less holds the version number. It's what tells your PS3 whether or not your console is running an outdated firmware or if it's up to date.

What does having the ability to change that number through this PC app give us? At this stage right now, it is a great asset for those running a custom firmware. If for example you are running Rogero and you decide you don't like it and would rather go back down to 3.55, this program will allow you to spoof the version so that it appears higher than what you already have. This means that 3.55 OFW would install without an issue. It should be said however that since this method is in its early builds it should be used with caution under the presence of a hardware flasher just in case. Right now it only works on CFW systems, so keep that in mind. Other than that, have fun with this new development.
