We're all familiar with what software emulators do. They allow us to play some of our favorite classic games without having to go through the hassle of finding our old systems and hooking them up. Typically this type of software is used for older systems like the NES, SNES, or Genesis, but what if I told you PS2 can now be added to that list?

Those of you who follow the scene more closely might be saying "well we can do that already with a dongle or a downgrade," but you will be pleased to know that this new method on PS3 Wiki is completely dongle free! Rather than having to mess about with cumbersome hardware, this actual fix involves a simple replacement of a few key files. If you're up for taking the risk of replacing some of these files on your system, the process is quite simple. According to the readme:

Method (on Firmware 3.55, without! Cobra-USB Dongle or Downgrade) for all consoles (fat & slim).

  1. Replace following files on your consoles /dev_flash/ with the ones included in this archive p3dwik-ps2compatfiles.rar
  2. Get into Factory Service Mode (FSM Tool/Dongle)
  3. Insert your Original PS2 Game Disc

As always be sure to back up your /dev_flash before trying any of this to prevent consequences.

this is the only Reason i haven't upgraded to a slim amd stuck with the fat. ive been through 4 broken consoles that have all lasted less than a year because they play ps2 games. sony charges 129 dollars for this every time if your out of warrenty and they also offer a trade in deal for the newer slim model for only 99 dollars if you wanna go that route and lose you ps2 functionality. now i find out they could all do it all along?? i could have saved sooo much money trading in for the slimmer console the doesnt overheat and get the ylod. fuc* you sony. just fuc* you.

btw. console broke again 2 weeks ago. waiting a little bit cause i dont wanna go through this bullshi* again just to have it break in 4 months. gonna trade in this time but this will be console number 5. ps3 is only 6 and a half years old. i think everyone can do the math. 129 times 4. later

While it is rare for slim consoles to over heat I have had mine over heat before. Mainly do to no air conditioning and it having been a very hot summer day, 30+ celsius in my apartment that day.

I call BS, I have an OG60gb PS3 paid for in January 2007, only 1 YLOD about September 2009. Paid the $150 for the replacement and been playing non stop since. Sounds like your not paying Sony but rather paying game shops for a quick fix. Your the ONLY person I have ever heard of with these many broken systems, besides people who have tried to fix them there selves.

why not just play it on a PS2 if you wanna play them so badly saves a ton of money.
And if you don't happen to have one they are dirt cheap

PS2's on ebay are dirt cheap. Just sayin.

Anyway, I have a release day PS3 and it's been running non stop since they released F@H. Not a single problem with it. Just lucky I guess.

Tried this and I couldnt even replace those files, sure it could work if I got around that somehow..
But people are reporting that it buggy as hell. And it does not support backups.
Im not sure its worth it. I have some original ps2 games like FFX, FFXII, Kingdom Hearts 2 and Tekken tag tournament. But I think I'll stick to an emulator for PC instead. That works almost perfect for me

I don't know how much all of you have read around, but this emulation of PS2 is -software- based. That means it runs like shit. Don't believe me? Go watch a comparison video of the old 60gb vs the old 80gb for games. Frame rate loss, stuttering, games flat-out black screening. The reason why the old 60gb was so good was because it had separate, -hardware- based emulation. Essentially, in a layman's term, it had a PS2 inside of it. Hence it was able to run games nearly perfectly compared to the PS2. Sony dropped support (turned off the flag that's in every console that enables software emulation) because in order to fix the software emulation, it would require an insane amount of work, an entire re-write of the emulator. What you're all getting on non-BC 60gb consoles is 80gb emulation. And i assure you, it's not pretty.
