PayPal founder plans on making Rapture |

Peter Thiel, he may not be a name synonymous with internet folk or sea folk, but he was one of the original PayPal founders and an early investor in a little something called Facebook. So whether or not you've bought something online or bitched about your favourite game to your friends, Thiel may have had a hand in it.
Thiel has invested 1.25 million to an initiative to create a floating liibertarian country in international waters, according to Details magazine, who profiled Thiel as a billionaire. The initiative, known as Seasteading Institute, seeks to build separate nations on oil rig-like platforms that are international waters and reach beyond any national jurisdiction.
Details magazine describes the islands as a “kind of petri dish for implementing policies that libertarians, stymied by indifference at the voting booths, have been unable to advance: no welfare, looser building codes, no minimum wage, and few restrictions on weaspons”, so basically a few steps away from technological and biological soverignty and we'd have some splicers running around...give it a year or two.
Thiel spoke at a Seasteading conference two years ago saying “here are quite a lot of people who think it's not possible, [which is] a good thing. We don't need to really worry about those people very much, because since they don't think it's possible they won't take us very seriously. And they will not actually try to stop us until it's too late." Thiel apparently made a half a million dollar donation back in 2008 and whilst it's a mix of jealousy and confusion that I don't have or ever will have that kind of money, I do wish the mad bastard and his rich, mad collegues, the best.
