Ouya Smashes its Kickstarter Goal in Eight Hours |
Listed in: News Tags: android, hacks, homebrew, kickstarter, ouya
Here’s another update on one of yesterday’s stories: Apparently the Ouya, an Android-based, open-source console which we noted yesterday was attempting to raise around $950,000 via Kickstarter, has already hit its goal. In fact, in the last 24 hours, the project has raised over $2,000,000, and bashed its way through the initial project goal in around eight hours.

Good news for open-source lovers, hackers and homebrews? Possibly. All of the Ouya’s games will be free-to-play (though may be demos or microtransaction-based), and the hardware is developed to allow hacking, tweaking and modification. In fact, such actions are even encouraged by the people behind the project. Of course, there is still the lingering question of how exactly this differs from simply playing Android-based games on your computer, but there’s likely a market for TV-based Android devices.
It all depends on whether Android developers will see the device as another platform for their games, or an exclusive place from which to deliver different types of content.
We’ll keep you updated as the project rolls on—Ouya has 28 more days to churn up some cash.

Had you looked it was over 3 million by that time. Now it's damn near 3.5 million and will be within minutes.
The support for this is freaking amazing!
