OtherOS and PS3 gets reunited again

Sony just can't seem to catch a break. While still dealing with the problem of the PSN breach, Sony now has to contend with another set of hackers who now claim that they have successfully returned OtherOS on the PS3.

Hacker Youness Alaoui posted on Twitter the following announcement:

"But today, we have some very good news for you, OtherOS is finally making a comeback to our PS3 systems. The team at gitbrew.org have released a publication announcing OtherOS++, a modified firmware that brings back the OtherOS option allowing you to install Linux back int o your PS3, yes, Linux on the PS3 that you own! :)"

OtherOS was removed by Sony form the PlayStation 3 citing security reasons, earlier this year. This action angered a lot of PS3 owners, even resulting to a lawsuit from Finland, on the grounds that "the removal of OtherOS crippled console features that were present at the time of purchase."

So the US army are stupid? How many did they buy for the OtherOS feature? I think it was 1000 PS3s? Or was it 10,000?

I also got my first PS3 and it had OtherOS and I used it all the time. I also used the SD/CF slots and 4 USB ports too so when the 60GB died and $ony forced my to get a slim I was really disappointed in the lack of features that it had. I have been looking around for a working good 60GB since and none are to be found. The working ones are not for sale and all I can find are YLOD 60gbs these days. :(

I bought my PS3 for both, I wanted to play games every now and then, but I needed a nice, quiet web server with a low power consumption for various projects I'm doing as part of my course.

A couple of months later, and I'm being forced to choose between two features that I paid for.

Honestly, I could make the EXACT same argument for the iPhone; who's stupid enough to buy it for games? Surely if Apple took away its ability to play games retroactively and forcefully by banning you from the App store and iTunes unless you updated, it'd be okay because you can still make calls?

No? Exactly. Be quiet, don't tell people what to do with their hardware and respect the simple truth which is that Sony played downright dirty with this move.

Hopefully they'll bring Linux back officially as a part of the restructuring, now that they're bringing in some competent devs. Call it wishful thinking.

You got it reversed for your iphone argument. Other OS is on equal grounds as the Phone feature. Apple devices core sales go for its original ability to play music. As PS3's sales are known for games. Reality is, majority buy ps3 for its games and OS is a bonus, such as you buy a "Ipod TOUCH" and phone is a bonus.

i have an iphone myself and to be honest its garbage, signal cuts off and you cant use in a basement.i sacrificed my old number to have a shitty quality phone that doesnt have any signal at my workplace. just like other OS is useless. i would have had it and be complaining but ps3 already has video,photo,int ernet browser.i dont get why people have to be so greedy n butt hurt for something that's naturally not meant to be.

as much as i want OS back like most people. i know that it wasnt reliable since its the first time they put such an option on a console and it was bound to fail and kill sony from the inside since it was a test "feature" to lure in sales.

If $ony want to stop the hackers then they should bring out a new firmware with OtherOS back in it. That will stop all hackers but do you really think $ony are that smart?

If you want a console then go get a Xbox360 AND a Wii as them together are about the same price as a PS3 and they do about the same these days. BUT they are both more secure and safe.

I bought my PS3 for the same price, with Toy Story 3 game and the first two movies on Blu-ray, with a 250 Gb hard drive for the same price as a 360 with that size hard drive.
You're so dumb. Really. I don't have to worry about RRoD and I love all the games that I have on my PS3.
The Wii has very few good games, and one or two that I would actual enjoy playing, while the PS3 has soooo many that I absolutely LOVE. The 360 only has 1 game that I wish the PS3 had: Halo: Reach. If I had gotten a 360, it could have RRoD'd on me like my roommate's did the first week he had it. (The slim model.) And I would miss all the PS3 games that I love playing like God of War III and Gran Turismo.

He didn't say anything to the contrary, but back when most of us purchased our consoles, yes, the Red Rings were a perfectly valid reason to not purchase the Xbox. We all know they're not so much an issue with newer consoles.

Actually, a week after my roommate bought his Slim 360, when I was gonna buy one, too, his Slim 360 corrupted his hard drive and no longer works. We were trying to play Reach and it just froze and still doesn't work.

I agree with you for the most part, but I just want to say that it is really personal pref. on what games you think are great. (obv.) Personally I think the wii has only a couple good games and same with 360. I'd love to try Gears of War though, and I really wanna play Fable 2 and 3. Halo can suck it. i hate that series. Same with Wii, i wanna play mario galaxy and Mario galaxy 2. SSMBM also. ps3 imo has more games i like, even if some are multi-plat. I had a 360 once and didn't care for it then. probably cuz it was early and not many good games for it.

360 is the joke. Sure Sony has their problems but at least they have reliable hardware, good games, and don't charge you extra fees to use the online half of the game you paid for.

LOL are you REALLY suggesting people to spend $300 for a console with $60 for multiplayer and breaks down within a month of purchase? Steam is the best gaming platform right now and Dolphin can play just about any Wii game on the market.

Ever since OOS was removed I've been waiting for something to come along which allows a decent OOS implementation in later FW, I hope this is it.

I will wait before risking my console though of course.

YES they may be using the ps3 to analyze images, that doesnt mean they are just viewing them on the xmb and going "HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM MM" they need the linux OS to actually process the images

i love PS3....even if XBOX was free still couldn't top PS3 yeah there are some games i wish PS3 had mostly MASS EFFECT....but really i just wanna get online i met some good friends on there and a whole bunch of add on content is coming out.....thats what i really want....and if you think about u can get hacked if you put ur information almost anywhere online so all these lawsuites are doing is just delaying the time we have till we can play.

PSN is playable through CFW, they just figured out QA and all that stuff, it's gonna be sort of CFW's again. The SPU core is open now they benefit from using most of the space by digging into DEV_FLASH instead of the HDD0/PS3/GAME/XXXXX/EBOOT.BIN, or whatever. The OtherOS is back. It's 2011 - New graphic cards just hit the market, Intel is soon out with their fancy stuff. Corsair just released their 2000 sizable DRAM to fit your DIMMs. After L.A Noire all my consoles will dust down probably, until the fall, or perhaps longer.

Just playing the games that are exclusive whatever console. If they're amazing okay. Otherwise consoles are crap and holding everything back.

But really.. PSN, and hacks, and DDDoS attacks.. whatever. Sony went sticking their hands down some guys pants, the hackers paid their fines and did their deeds, even then Sony was after them. And this was only to prove that OtherOS may be possible. I mean, GeoHot never released the masterkey; Decrypted just to get some free games.. It was more about the OtherOS; as it was removed with a bunch of other stuff.. Woke up, turned it on.. what the... :(

I'm more like in their shoes, Microsoft and Sony is like; well probably more known to kids and so than ATI/nVidia; but MS vs Sony, and Sony does something that stupid to sell more, then after they did it, they sold less. Good financial year Sony!
