Obama Administration Against SOPA

Games journalist Jim Sterling has apparently gotten an e-mailfrom The White House, as a response to petitions standing against SOPA. I wrote about my views on SOPA earlier today and I’m happy to hear that the Obama Administration’s views on SOPA are quite similar to mine.

They say that they call on ‘all sides to work together to pass sound legislation this year’ that will help prevent piracy and give rights holders tools to prosecute while still ‘staying true’ to the principles outlined in the e-mail, which talk about how the internet serves the world and businesses due to it’s openness, and how its architecture shouldn't be changed.

The e-mail goes on to talk about how Washington is needs public input on where to take things from here. Interestingly, they write that the organizer of the petition and a random sample of the signers will be invited to a conference call to discuss this issue with the Administration, followed by an ‘online event’ to get more input and answer the public’s questions. Details of these events will ‘follow in the coming days’.

This SOPA thing has gotten bigger than most of us thought it would, but it’s about time the issue is brought to serious discussions.

I want privacy, but also for the media industries to stop getting ripped apart by piracy.

If we look at games, film and music, all three have multi-million dollar-making products that are international hits. Call Of Duty, Avatar and Lady Gaga may be making the millions, but it’s their competition that spirals downwards due to piracy.

As always, looking forward to your thoughts, people!

This is just a cry from help from the record industry and Hollywood. They are unwilling to change how they do business, so they want to give idiots in Washington carte blanche to walk down a road of censorship. The price of going to a movie is fueling movie piracy and the fact that a $20 CD has 2 songs that are radio-worthy fuels the music piracy. True, there is more to it, but this is not Congress's fight. If they want to make it possible to charge people with theft, that is one thing. Changing the internet is not an acceptable answer.

Make a completely new file extension and a new program that is the only one able to open the extension? And have that program to developers only.

i read somthing the other day in a forum that applies here, if its a picture or sound it can be copied, no ammount of "data protection" can stop piracy even enforcing data protection online only "shifts" the problem, point is piracy has survived hundreds of diffrent media shifts because if people cant afford somthing or the content doesnt hold its own value people will want it cheaper and where there is a will there is a way, short of banning all public access to music or video and having cinemas enforced by armed guards, dont expect piracy to ever be stopped, all they will manage is to let criminal gangs and organisations profit from distributing contend on physical formats i.e blueray disks and hard drives and such, ofcourse this is the real problem companies where ok when piracy was on a platform they profited from where as internet streaming makes no hardware sales so only now are they getting so pissed

Proprietary formats are cracked all the time, it wouldn't be enough on its own.

SOPA is a joke.. it will not do anything except get abused and used by major corporations to knock out any possible competition, piracy doesn't "cost" the companies a D**N thing, the simple fact is, most pirates, are people who simply wouldnt but the product either way, therefore they don't lose much if anything, they waste most of their money investing into "DRMs' and other obnoctious anti piracy stuff. companies need to stop b**ching about piracy, SOPA is a very dangerous bill that shouldn't be passed.

Sounds a lot like what SOPA was said to be in the first place. Also, There is a good chance they are just saying this to make him happy. Talk is cheap.

The media industry make billions and they are worried about the millions they lose due to games being copied. Not stolen, but copied! Man capitalist are sure greedy. I mean look at minecraft. The game was copied thousands of times and still when the game came out it was bought. If the media stops putting out crap. It wouldn't be copied. People are willing to pay for quality,

Before entering this story, I knew that everything Obama does is a sham. Glad to see him prove me right again. How can he be against SOPA if his administration were the very people who introduced it?

Obama seeks to destroy our liberty and sheep like the person who wrote this article are the reason he is in the white house, and why the USA is in such a sad state of affairs. :-x

The "Stop Online Piracy Act" bill was introduced by the House. I hope you don't call the "House of Representatives ", his people. They are complete opposites, and if you'd only paid attention to the news, you would have known this.

The Republican House has promised to take down anything Obama proposed, hence the "opposite" statement. Plus, a bill can be initiated or introduced without the consent of the President.

The OP of who we are replying to stated that Obama introduced this bill, when in fact, it was introduced by the House. Sure, before a bill becomes law, it has to go through the President, however, anybody can introduce a bill without the consent of the President.

This is totally stupid what this legislation want to do to stop piracy. COD makes millions, Skyrim, Avatar, Britney, Taylor Swift, Batman AC, Dark Knight makes million. What this means is that if you do a great game, great music, great movie etc.., people will pay for them. But is absurd that you pay for example $60 for a game like Duke Nukem Forever, is a game very simple with no replay value and you see much better title around for the same price. What people do is try to play at the minimun cost, rent it or download it. Download it is cheaper so thats what most people will do. Company should be more sincere with their products and low their price. With movies and music the same thing, you buy a cd for a song that you here on the radio, and pay for it almost 20 bucks, and when you play the disc you notice that only one song is good on the whole disc. If they dont want piracy, do good things, or simply create a new security anti piracy measure.

The industries that would supposedly be protected by this legislation are some of the biggest and fastest growing in the world. WHO thinks this is necessary again? What the supporters of this bill call piracy I call sharing. We have always been able to share our media, and we will always find ways to continue.
You can't own light and numbers.
