NPD: Guitar Hero III is the best selling title in the US of all time

The third installment of Activision's recently cancelled music franchise is the highest-grossing game in the United States for the past 15 years, according to the recent figures from the NPD group.

The U.S.-focused tracking firm reveals that Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock has so far moved US$ 830.9 million in lifetime sales. These numbers includes retail sales plus its bundled guitar controllers but not the revenues generated from downloadable songs. NPD notes that the data gathered reflects gross sales since 1995 and is not inflation adjusted.

Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops takes the second spot, though from the look of things, it is bound to overtake Guitar Hero III soon. So far, the hit FPS title has registered US$ 787.4 million in revenue after less than five months on the store shelves. Two other Call of Duty titles fill up the best selling list, with Modern Warfare 2 on the fourth spot and the first Modern Warfare title taking the tenth place.

Nintendo has four titles on the list, including Wii Fit with Balance Board taking the third spot with a life-to-date sales of US$ 736.6 million, while rival music title, Rock Band takes the list's on fifth place with US$ 670.7 million.

Here's the complete list of top-selling titles in the U.S. by revenue, according to NPD:

Of course, guitar hero III was, and still is, the best game in their franchize.

Dragonforce, roling stones, metallica, Kiss, Sex Pistols..............and many more, never other precuel or sequel of guitar hero could reunite so much talented groups.

Indeed, the later gruitar hero games, jus had, lame artist to begin with, so. no matter what, GH3 is the best of the best, there is no doubt why it is the best selling tittle.

well, rock band trys to get more newer bands the classics. the newer ones kinda suck serious ass.

Would be keen to see the inflation-adjusted figures. I think it'd be a lot different - 1995 to 2011 is a rather big timespan.
