NPD February 2011: Black Ops becomes the best selling game in history

For the fourth month in a row, Activision's hit first-person shooter shooter sequel, Call of Duty: Black Ops, dominated the charts and in the process, named the best-selling game in history, according to NPD.

In the month of February, the U.S. retail video game sales were up 3 percent compared to last month, thanks to the strong sales of console hardware, software and accessories. But its not all good news however as sales of handhelds dropped by almost 27 percent.

"We are looking for the portable segment of the market to rebound beginning later this month when the highly anticipated 3DS launches in the U.S. on March 27th," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier.

Leading the pack this month in the software side is Black Ops, as it retains its number one position, out-dueling Capcom's latest beat-em-up offering, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, which took the second spot. Rounding off the top five this month are: Ubisoft's Just Dance 2 at number three, Take-Two's awesome hoops game NBA 2K11 at number four and EA's sci-fi horrow sequel, Dead Space 2 at five.

Here's the top 10 software sales result for February 2011:

Dead Space 2 (Electronic Arts) - Xbox 360, PS3, PC
Zumba Fitness: Join the Party (Majesco) - Wii, Xbox 360, PS3
Bulletstorm (Electronic Arts) - Xbox 360, PS3, PC
Killzone 3 (Sony) - PS3
Michael Jackson The Experience (Ubisoft) - Wii, DS, PSP
Mario Sports Mix (Nintendo) - Wii

On the hardware department, Microsoft has revealed that the Xbox 360 was the best selling console for the month, moving 535,000 units, a 27 percent increase compared to the same month last year. Nintendo also revealed that the Wii sold 454,000 units in February, up over 14 percent from last year. The latest figure has now put the system above the 35 million mark in the U.S. that is faster than any other console in history. Sony remains tight lip on the results, although NPD revealed that all three consoles was up this month compare to last year.

congrats to opinionated advertisement. before the game was released the game trailer said it was the best game ever in quotes from websites and gaming magazines. this is an opinion, and opinion which can be swayed by... cash. then, they had the nerve to release an unfinished game. yes, now the game works 99% of the time.

They did everything right from production to advertising. The online play become repetitive quickly, but when it first came out...i love it.

let me rephrase that for you "just like any other Activision sequel"

HAhaha this franchise could en like Guitar Hero...could not would ok? cause at least it seems devs are not screwing up but this game is like playing MAdden 11...you get the same since MAdden 2001 but with better graphics and better online...but same mechanics
