Ninja Gaiden Devs: Designing for fans ruins series' |

Ninja Theory continues to fight for being right and true with their upcoming release of Devil May Cry. The game is looking to be pretty fun and cool and what-not but with the recent sore review scores for Ninja Gaiden 3, people are starting to wonder what NT are actually doing with the upcoming DMC reboot.

Tameem Antoniades, chief designer at Ninja Theory says "Nothing needs a reboot unless that reboot works. Look at Batman. The parallel to the Batman reboot was Catwoman. Nobody needed that, but when it works it can change the course of a franchise in a positive way. It can make it survive." I have to be amused that while Catwoman was released prior to the Nolan Batman trilogy, I have to say that he is right in his analogy and hope that DMC doesn't turn out to be like Catwoman.
"The decision as to whether DMC needed a reboot or not: it's irrelevant what my opinion is because that decision was Capcom's. They felt it needed something, which is why they not only decided to take a bold step and reinvent it, but to give it to a non-Japanese dev. "They had their reasons and that was our mandate. They wanted a reinvention - a reinterpretation - and that's what we went ahead and did." Many people are fairly worried about the Western approach they are taking over for Capcom's original design.
"There was a feeling from some of the guys at Capcom that it could continue the way it was, but that there were certain tropes that were being - I don't know how to put this... I think when you compare it to where a lot of games have arrived at - Western games in particular, where levels feel more open and the world feels more grounded - it felt like DMC was a little stuck in its ways. It needed to be let loose. That's what we were told as part of our mandate to reinvent it." However, NT are keeping a finger on the pulse for fan reactions and death threats
"Usually the worst creative crimes are made when you're trying to make a game for someone else - some perceived demographic that, in all likelihood, doesn't actually exist. Philosophically, the way to make a successful game is to believe in what you're doing, then hope that sales follow. I'm not trying to design around what I think people will want. That's where you get into creative bankruptcy. That, more than anything, will kill a series." Philosophically, I think these guys are just making a grab for cash.
I would have personally asked him why and what reasons does the world need another Devil May Cry. What would you say?
Do you think a new DMC is a good idea or are they just cashing in on a franchise that lost itself years ago?

Unreal Engine has always felt like a sloppy engine to me even stiff in some aspects. Also the fact that the framerate has been reduced to 30fps instead of 60fps like in the old games does not help. Also I hate it's art style. Unreal Engine is no MT Framework and the people at Ninja Theory definitely do not have the same level of expertise at this genre as Capcom's in house people.
The character looks lame and the backstory so far sounds awful (Demon orphanages.... Really?). I don't see the point in this reboot. DMC was selling fine and the only thing that killed DMC was Capcom's idiocy.
By the way I'm confused at the analogy. Is DmC supposed to be Catwoman and the original Devil May Cry is Nolan's Batman? Cause I don't know what he is talking about when he say's Batman didn't need a reboot. Did he not see Batman and Robin?
