Ngmoco boss: Sony's in trouble, Microsoft in better shape

Ngmoco's outspoken CEO, Neil Young, says Microsoft has a more better ground than Sony in the games hardware market.

Speaking in a recent interview with IndustryGamers, Young said that despite Sony's history of making consoles, the video games business are constantly evolving and he believes that Microsoft has a much better position in the future.

"In the hardware world, I think Sony’s massively out of position. I think they’re in trouble. I think Microsoft’s in much better shape," he said.

"They understand cloud computing; the Xbox Live service is a world-class service, and they’ve got a foothold in mobile, albeit a tenuous one. I think they’re in better shape," he continued, adding, "I think Nintendo always has the benefit of its franchises, but I don’t think it ends up being a really rich ecosystem for third parties."

Young seems like not a very big fan of Sony. In a similar interview earlier this month, he was quoted as saying that Sony's upcoming Next Generation Portable will be a "dead on arrival" follow-up to a handheld system that's already "done".

"I think PSP is done and the new [NGP] is dead on arrival," he said. "It's really difficult to compete with an app store that has hundreds of thousands of applications and a wide range of options where the average price paid is around US$ 1.20 and there are tens, if not hundreds of thousands of free applications that are really high quality. So I just don't think Sony's going to be able to compete with that."

I would care what he says, but then again I've seen what Ngmoco done for the videogame industry. Which is nothing besides blatant plagarism.

From everything I've seen, most of their gaming portfolio consists of games taken Pogo.com, then they change the name, and slap them on the iphone and android market. The other part of what Ngmoco has done is steal Facebook game ideas like Farmville, and once again merely change the name.

I'd consider listening to their opinions if they actually made something that was semi-original. But thankfully they haven't, so I won't concern myself with the words that spew from their mouth-hole

Since I buy games for all three systems and a gamer first. Microsoft this time has a better grip this time around. I like the 360 much better even though I had to buy 2 of them. The PSP 2 or NGP flop or not I'm buying it cause the original Psp I loved it cause its fantastic. NGP 2 analog sticks count me in.

When this drama is over, Sony may become a good company again.

The only things I think that can get Sony out of any slump is by having the lower price on their next console, releasing their next console with 3-5 AAA games, or improve PSN to where it can match XBL.

Anyways they're not even in a bad position right now. I think they're only losing in sales in the USA.

Playstation has a long list of strong and good titles already on the system, has a long list of strong titles coming to the system, I don't see how they are in trouble...

Also, who are these Flash game developers to speak out on stuff happening in big boys league anyway...

What Sony's not on trouble?! Then the lawsuits they have against them is a positive side note?

Be serious, they have 2 lawsuits against Sony, and Sony against the hackers.

I'd say this guy is being a little insensitive towards sony right now, considering they're strongly based in japan and dealing with, ya know, massive earthquakes, tsunami's and possible radioactive fallout. of course the companies in a bad situation. That being said, their machine is orders of magnitude better than anything microsoft could hope to build.

Coming from a recently ex-sony fan, the crap they have pulled with the PS3, I have no intentions of buying the PS4 (unless they remake FF7, but thats quite a different story). The features I start with, I also expect to have the day I unplug my console to replace with the next version. I don't expect to have a rootkit on my console etc.

I'll see how they behave with the NGP before I buy another Sony gaming platform. They bungled how they handled the PSP and keep giving more reasons to not support the PS3. Don't get me wrong - the devices are good but they are becoming a company I don't really want to deal with.

one of his points was that microsoft understands the cloud computing yet the playstation is the only console that uses it? That doesnt make sense.

I really hope the PS suite really succeed on the future. So I can "laugh out loud" when he will be forced to see his game running on a system he thought will fail =P

That's funny how clueless this guy is. Has he even checked out the PlayStation Network? The PlayStation Store is getting more and more content. If you want a cell phone that does games, you will be able to soon get PlayStation Suite certified phones. The PSP2(NGP) is not meant to be a phone. As far as controls and graphics goes it stomps cell phones right now. I can't wait to see more phones like the Xperia Play come out that have the control pad buttons with decent large screens and killer graphics. It will happen if the people want it and if companies see how much of a success the Xperia Play turns out to be. I hope it does because I like better devices at better prices. Don't all of you?

He is right on the money. Sony is stuck in an old paradigm mentality. The company is massive and they barely community across departments. So, it is no wonder that their mindset is stuck in doing what would have worked if XBOX and Wii didn't have market dominance. Plus, suing people over expanding the capability of your unit is only going to stifle innovation. While Microsoft and Nintendo hired their hackers.

Uh NGP is going to be have stuff a bit better than the little apps/games on Windows Mobile. The NGP is in a totally different league, along with the 3DS.

Yeah, but I guarantee you that the licensing fee for the NGP will be worlds larger than it is for the App Store. On the upside, it keeps all the crap Apps out of the PS Suite, but on the downside, it means that even if you have a great idea, you probably won't be able to afford the publishing costs.

That's correct until you consider the next gen of smart phones coming down the line with built in GPUs and Gigahertz multi-core processors... App stores seem to have simple games because most devs on those market places are professionals and just trying to cash in on a quick buck.

Was is with the rise of small time devs getting an overgrown head cause they made a minute made game like the farmville and angry birds devs. I mean I love games like tetris and dr.mario but for those games to be the head of the industry is something that I wouldn't want to be a part of and the gaming world has evolved since then.

This guy must be sucking up to micro$haft to get them to throw some money their way. Like micro$haft always does when the want something on their product. Maybe thats what's he talking about that micro$haft is in a better game postion because the unload x amount of money on a game to make it an exclusive. It's great to talk up micro$haft so his company can be in micro$haft's crosshairs to work on their window 7 phones.
