As Prototype 2 builds towards launch, the developers are trying to give us more and more reasons to hate and ultimately hunt down and kill the hero we played in the first game. This new trailer makes a pretty good case for it.

When I first heard that we'd be playing Sgt. James Heller in Prototype 2, rather than the protagonist from the first game, Alex Mercer, I was a bit confused. Mercer had a pretty good story and reason for doing what he did after all, and he was hardly a villain. Why would we be trying to kill him in the new game?

As you can see in this latest trailer, it's all about that damn propaganda. The government and Blackwatch has managed to lay the whole viral outbreak in Lower Manhattan squarely on the shoulders of Alex Mercer - the one guy who was trying to stop the whole damn thing. Yeah, that sounds about right.

So now Sgt. Heller's family is dead, he's back from deployment, infected at some point, and now he's a super virus monster dude as well. Following the propaganda, he places the blame on Mercer and decides to go after him. Gore and zombies and monsters ensue.

I don't know about you, but if there was a zombie/monster outbreak in my hometown (and I survived it), I'd be damned if I'd still live there or ever go back. Reminds me of the idiotic people that decided to return to London in 28 Weeks Later. Horror requires bad decision making, but eff that noise.

Prototype 2 is due out April 24th.
