MW3 Dev: Call of Duty engine is a Porsche |

Another day, another bif of analysis. So again let's bring in the context. You're a big game manufacturer, the highest selling in the world, almost. That almost is being kept away with one game, the game which you usually hold in your genre and so you want to keep that place, with consider your track record, you more than likely will, so what do you do? What do you say?
Well apparently anything as many game devs have come out of the woodwork this week to claim some things and beat their chest. The first was from the co-developer of the game, Sledgehammer Games, which I only really began to hear about this year...still licking your wounds from Treyarch and Infinity Ward?
The IW engine was originally made from a modded version of the Quake 3 engine. It was licensed back in the day and has been improved on and modded ever since. That engine has been used ever since CoD2 back in 2005 and Glen Schofield has sent out to defend (offend) everyone and everything about their game (audience).
In an interview with CVG, Schofield said, like a jock announcing his sexual conquests, "Well I'll tell you one thing, I've worked on a lot of engines over my lifetime and spent a lot of time putting graphics in to them and this thing is Porsche," he said. "And what I mean by that is that it is stream-lined, everything in it is perfectly freaking clean. You can tell it's been worked on for years. It's easy to upgrade." I do think, yes, the Modern Warfare engine has been incredibly tight in the past and I'm sure everyone has had a go looking at how good it is.
"We worked with engines before that are like f***ing spaghetti. You can't work on a part and put it back in without messing with everything else." If this is true, then well maybe it was good that the guys at Activison have tried different engines and just gone back to their favourite squeeze.
Then it gets a bit weird." "There is so much that we've added, so when someone says 'cut and paste', I don't even want to talk to them because they don't know," he said. "They just don't know." I do not know what the definition of a "cut and paste critic" is, I'm assuming it's those people who think you've used the same engine, characters, storyline from elsewhere. I don't think Call of Duty has done any of those things personally. The things it's explored have been aruond in fiction for a long time and as I've stated above, their engine has too.
"And then on top of that you have what we added to the audio engine. Then there's a lot of stuff under the hood," he added. "People don't think about this but when you make your tools better and you can iterate twice as many times, you make the game better."
Well, see MW3 drops in November, BF3 drops in less than 7 days. Schofield is pointing out they've got something new on the table...that's not old...not as new as the new guys, but still new and people love that word. That and engines...Hey, if you like it, enjoy playing it good, just don't say it looks good is the reason that it is good. Megan Fox looks good, but she won't win any awards in the field of acting.
