More analysts have misgivings about PS4

Are you impressed with the reported PS4 from Sony? As it turns out, some analysts have some misgivings about it, saying that Sony merely felt compelled to reveal it to the public because of Project Cafe.

EEDR analyst Jesse Divinich's take on the matter is this:

"The consoles of the future will focus more on functionality and less on graphics. If we have learned anything from the onslaught of mobile and social games over the last three years, it is that consumers are beginning to prefer function, simplicity, and cross-entertainment integration."

Of course, Michael Pachter has got something to say about it too:

"I think it is more than 3 years away, so pretty early to speculate. My view is that they started 'development' on PS4 when the PS3 launched, and felt compelled to disclose now because of Wii 2. They won't settle on final specs for another two years"

David Cole had previously given his opinion as well about the PS4, saying that Sony will most likely be not in a rush to launch the new console. The company, meanwhile, has said that consumers may very well expect the PS4 to retain the optical drive as in the PS3. We'll be updating you with more info on this as they come.

Sony shouldn't go cheap with the PS4. They need it to be to notch in order to stay ahead of the competition. Relying on great games is important but when 2 our more systems have the same game it is important to give users something else. Something like power to show the best experience. I hope Sony uses something 3 to 4 times more powerful than the cell as well as giving the system a lot more ram. Give us great features too.

Put in a bigger maybe faster cell, more ram and a decent graphics card and it shouldn't be that bad.

The money went into the cell processor the first time around for the PS3. Now that the technology's there, it won't cost Sony as much to make a more powerful system.

If that could be the case, the cell processor would be on the new PSP system,. but is not.. so probably no Cell for the Ps4

Who wouldn't love to carry a PSP the size of a PS3? Using Cell requires a large heatsink and fan. Cortex A9 is a power-efficient CPU, which is best suited for handheld platforms.

Actually there's one thing. It seems analyst have failed to learn that casual gamers are not loyal gamers.

I've also noticed that "industry analysts" insist on continuing to address videogames as the same thing as dollar apps.

Kind of like how analysts and critics made kanye west and lady gaga equal to music.

I'd kind of rather not even fucking hear about it, but you cant just ignore things and hope they go away either.

Better to keep an eye on people like that.

Noooo! Looks like there's a chance i might go over to Xbox next generation. If Sony chooses to go with casual gamers next generation (as Walo above me states), I've got a feeling Sony will fail miserably.

What for got about how successful the ps1 and ps2 were, they supported both the casual gamers and the hard core gamers and were both very successful consoles. Actually the ps3 is the first time Sony has chosen to focus more on the more hard core gamers and for get about the casual gamers who just want to have fun and enjoy the games.

You hit a nail there. Like you said processing power is not the same as graphics. There's other things that require processing power like physics, AI, animation and UI.

Sony's always going to at least attempt to be on top with their hardware. PSP was like that, PS3, NGP, now the PS4.

They want you to feel like you bought the Mercedes of consoles when you buy their stuff.

Whether or not it actually IS the Mercedes of consoles is all up to interpretation

why the hell would I want all my games to simple? that's boring... I can play casual games on my phone, I don't need a console for that.

I want "real" games on a console... long, epic stories with more complex (yet fun) gameplay and cool online modes. And awesome graphics don't hurt either.

I don't know why people should be to bothered about this. COD has poor graphics and its the most popular game. I think Sony needs to focus more on the OS and make it not just a console, but an "entertainment center".

Can someone explain this "casual and hardcore gamer" to me? What are the differences and similarities? Are there any official definitions?
Ok ill tell you what i think they are and then correct me if im wrong.

Hardcore-Someone who spends an above average amount of time and money on video games. While few in numbers has a fanbase with strong brand loyalty and considerable spending power.

Casual-basically the opposite, spend a below average amount of time and money on video games.While they may be the larger audience and buy similar products, are less likely to support the same creator in the long run.

IDK and IDC as long as it is good and works ill buy it. remember your dollars are your votes, you can change the way they make games.

hardcore gamers are the people who blow off work constantly and thier girlfriend left them 3 months ago because they play WAY TOO MUCH COD or WoW(dont get me wrong i put in two hours a day on black ops. these guys are rediculously skilled and usualy devout to one console.

the casual gamer is the one you see who will pick up a console just because of a certain game and it will mostly collect dust until another one spikes his curiosity. they also play canasta with their aunts online on the weekends.lol:-)

dont get me wrong i have a PS3 and a decent PC and i love them both but if you want power get a pc. nowadays pc's have a HDMI port making it a great entertainment center and gaming rig. if you want the latest in innovation on how to interact with the game. nintendo has proven this, Microsoft made nintendos idea better, and Sony......well i really have no opinion on that cuz i never played a move game

sorry for my rant i am a lil drunk...lol

Mkv and ntfs support would be nice for the ps4 and no stupid cinavia protection, plus ps3, ps2 and ps1 support wuld be nice plus longer games, i dont want graphics sharper then the human eye i want long decent game play, uncharteds graphics are good enough for me but with longer game play
