Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was in many ways a huge fanservice game for the fans of the two worlds, so Capcom really wanted to bring the best of what they've got into the game. Unfortunately, Monster Hunter was one series that didn't get any representation.

"Certainly they were on the list and we actually made a proposal to the Monster Hunter team and producer," Capcom community manager Seth Killian told Siliconera. "The answer I believe came back was no. You don’t just have to have the idea to have the character. You also have to get permission from the producer of that series to include the character and however they are implemented. They thought it wasn’t a good fit for the game and maybe they’re right. The hunter is sort of a malleable personality, rather than a super strong character in Monster Hunter since he’s so customizable.

Monster Hunter has long been a huge franchise for Capcom, especially in Japan where Monster Hunter Portable 3rd is already making big impacts in the software charts. It was a bit surprising that the hunter didn't make it to Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but it appears the Monster Hunter team had their way with that decision.
